Rear Wheel carrier welded on Chassis

Hi There,
I had this Kaymar spare wheel carrier and some of its brackets were missing.
So Grinaded all the extra plates and welded it on the chassis using 1.6mm Galvanised Steel Square Tube (Grade 200 Steel) and mounted 33 Inch tyre on it. Welding was done by a professional welder. There is a bit of play as seen in the video below, is it normal ?

I would expect that to fall off at some point. The 80 I bought had a welded on rear tire carrier and when I got it home from purchase, I discovered it was one 4 inch weld away from falling off.

That tube is too small for the task !
Your welder should have known that.
I thought everyone knew bigger is better 😁
Add some plate that runs all the way to the main back cross brace of the 80s frame and an angle brace going forward to the main frame and you should be good.
 
Like Broski said but I would also suggest adding a buttress to the lower portion to support the weight/flex.
 
Wow yeah the wall thickness on that square tubing is way too thin!! 1.6mm is around 0.062". If it was my truck I would want 0.188" so like 4.8mm wall thickness steel tubing. And galvanized tubing should not be welded without grinding the galvanizing off so you loose the benefit of galvanized anyways. I would return it to the shop that did the work and have them re-do it with standard steel of the appropriate thickness.

I have a Kaymar bumper with a Kaymar spare tire carrier, and this scares me. Your video shows the play when it is latched and locked, but what concerns me is when it is opened to access the tailgate. There’s a lot more stress on the Carrier and bracket when it is in the open position. Spare tire is fairly heavy and there’s a lot of leverage that is eased when it is latched and locked. You say a professional welder did this? I’d find a new welder!
 
all this metric dimensions are also messing with my head, but carry on....... :hillbilly:

I always remember that old saying when it comes to building stuff for offload use "overkill never fails"
 
I am gonna put the tyre back in the truck and add a bracket for 4KG gas bottle on the carrier and a rubbish bag. I hope that should be fine? Idea was mine and welder just did what I asked him to do. Should have discussed the idea with the mud brains first :D

Would you weld the spindle straight on the white tube you build for your 80?

Why dont you just contact Kaymar and get the proper bracket parts you are missing?
That, as others have said, is an accident waiting to happen to some innocent motorist behind you plus your insurance would be invalid, car unroadworthy etc

The Kaymar stuff is engineered and ADR approved for on road use
 
Alright, tyre is off the carrier and back inside the car. I will put a bin bag on the swing arm to hide it. Project fabrication swing away tyre carrier failed !
