Hey guys - I'm new to the cruiser world. A friend suggested I join this site for the latest & greatest info. I recently purchased a 1978 40 Series and was looking for suggestions for a rear bumper/tire carrier. I've been looking at the Iron Pig one but curious if that's the one to go with. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

there are more than a few options.
on a 40 series, its not terribly difficult to whip one up yourself.

@Dewey78 ..Off hand there's Metal Tech, 4x4 Labs, Iron Pig , our own 4plus, Kaymar ( might be hard to source locally ). I believe TLC is making one and Jason at Trail Tailor might still be offering one . I may be missing someone but these are the most commonly thrown around

I'm struggling with this issue. I'm nearing assembly of my '79 40 and am trying to figure out this challenge...

-I've already committed to carrying my spare off the body/on the bumper.
-I'm not likely to need a dedicated carrier, but like the option.
-I am likely to use a vertical bike carrier most of the time (can locally source)
-I DON'T want have to swing out the right arm every time I open the ambi door or drop the aqualu gate when in soft top mode.

I like the 4 Plus, and will likely end up with the planetary bull front. I don't see how the (ideal) bolt-on design can be lowered to achieve clearance for the right swing arm even if I were to modify the two arms to latch independently.

You're the LC Wizard. Can you work this out, or am I left to jabbing up something funky?

I don't know how you'd have a frame mounted carrier that would allow you to drop the tailgate without swinging the tire out of the way
The body is ~64" wide.
You can run a 32" if positioned perfectly, and still open one door without opening the tire carrier if you used something like our 1/2 carrier.
Anything over 32" would have to start extending beyond the body line, outward or it would start to encroach on the door.
You could build a separate and dedicated removable bike rack in the space where the cooler would go.

I hadn't even considered the tire crossing the midline; I was considering only the height of the swingouts in relation to the bottom of the door/top of the sill. Is this not a consideration? Is the swing low enough?

I continue to ignore this issue, keeping my tire, gas cans and cooler inside, strapped down with some awesome snap-on ratchet straps. When I want to bring my bike, I put a horiz. rack in the receiver. The more I consider it, the more I think my current solution is optimal.

The dog is less convinced as there is no room for a passenger and a dog.

no, there's just over 2 1/2" between the frame and the bottom of the doors' You would have to do a bumper that laid over the frame rail like Metal Tech's or Kaymar. That would lower the assembly making room for the arms under the door
