I like the extra width...I got the custom backspaced wheels that stick each side out an extra 1.5 inches, so essentially the same width as a 60 series.

I've got 60 axles on my 55 frame, you can see how far to move the shackles out.

Maybe i had a little thicker mdf. The staples I got were pretty short and I didn't get any punch through.

If I can get my rig to do what yours does, Pighead, then I'll be stoked! I have gotten through some pretty good stuff on the 55 axles.

Scrapdaddy, your pics helped me alot.

I am stoked about using the rear axle, for sure, and am going to make the ebrake work too. Now all I have to do is figure the front axle out.

Scrapdaddy, although I want to get power steering, I don't yet have it. How much modification will be needed to get the steering linkage I have to work?

All my stuff is 60, which I would recommend, staying with one type. You can make up one of a kind pieces, but custom gets exspensive. If your going to the new axles, might as well move up to power steering also.

I'm getting new tie rods made up from Marlin Crawler's, heavy duty tubing with 60 ends at the 55's width. Should say on my "to do" list.

Can't you put the self-adjusting rear brakes from 60/62 onto the 55 rear axle?
You could use spacers if you want more width.

yes, and yes. pigheads rig should be wider than my rig even though i have 6 series axles and he's got stock 55. he runs spacers and wider tires.

I had heard somewhere that you could not switch out the 62 rear parts onto the 55.

only reason i could think of would maybe be bolt pattern issues. redrill maybe. cable would have to be shortened for the brake adjusters and still have the custom cable to the ebrake handle/adapt stock 62 handle idea

disassembly

Disassembled the 62 front axle. Missing anything? I heard that it is best to get already rebuilt calipers. They are so expensive tho. Rotors aren t that expensive.

What is the best way to clean these things up. Seems like someone painted them without doing any prep. Thick paint that is rusty underneath and peeling. Can one sandblast parts like the knuckle?

I cleaned mine, the old fashion way, diesel fuel and a wire brush. Whole lot of scraping and scrubbing. Soap and water to finish it off.

Oh yea. I have two bolts that hold the old disks to the other thing:rolleyes:. It doesn't seem to want to separate. To the point where it seems like it is not supposed to separate:mad:. Even with a BFH. I have looked at some other pics and it seems like they had an bunch of bolts holding those two parts together while mine only had two. I only see the rounded heads of the bolts that go through both pieces and attach the tires.

More pics in a moment!!!

Pighead does not run wheel spacers.
I cut the middle part out of my backing plates, used that, threw away the rest of the backing plate. Don't the backing plates make you use 2 brake lines per front wheel or something like that? I understand that gravel can get stuck between the backing plate & whatever, I just like the access & looks of no back plate.
4Runner calipers are probably cheaper than 62, and probably better at braking. I just some rebuilt from Napa, took them cores from Pick&pull..
