Been on mud for a while and figured I would start a thread for my 1KD swap.....from a 3 point slow to 3 point Go!(at least I hope)

1KD-FTV engine testing
Build a stand I can start the engine on. Still need to add the radiator support, ground leads and wire harness holder. I'm going to fully assemble the engine so I can diagnose it before install. Hopefully the lump will just need a freshen up on some gaskets and clean the egr mess.

and then it snowed

How will you deal with all the sensors etc?

Plug them in! Sorry couldn't resist.
Seriously though, I have all of the sensors and devices attached to the ECU and engine, not to mention the immobilizer, gauge cluster(for VSS) and the entire vehicle wire harness. I also have TechStream software that will let me diagnose any electrical issues, and test engine sensors. This engine is a late 2006, so it has no watercooled egr, and a simpler immobilizer system.
The good news is that I inspected the oil screen on the sump and it was free of any oil globs that can plague this engine from faulty injector washers.

Found some damaged wires that were all burned together like they were resting on the exhaust. They have since been repaired

Checked the timing belt, brand new. This engine is very clean (on the outside), but I haven't scoped the pistons and cylinders. I'll get that once I get it running.

Cool build. Are you going standard or auto?

Thanks
Standard gearbox. Sorting the wiring at the moment. Looks like they include the SR5 wiring in some of the harness. Playing where's Waldo with the connectors.

Thanks, was a bit of a challenge since I've never imported anything before.
I hope to have it running soon, need to order a 1KZ radiator for a 90-94 hilux.

Subscribed and looking forward to enjoying your conversion thread!

If you are wondering about engine condition I recommend cutting your oil filter open and inspecting for debris.

^^^ that is a great idea.
I was going get the oil analyzed and use an endoscopic camera to inspect the pistons as well as do a compression check.

Thanks, yes will be totally stock for now. This is just so I can get the lump running and diagnose it

not an update to the engine swap but an update to the rig.

Built a stinger of sorts so I can judge the front end better, I can just see the top of it from the driver seat.

Great project!

My dream is a 1KD in my LJ78 Prado. I'll be following this thread closely.

If you're willing to share, where did you get the engine from? Roughly what sort of cost?

I found a number of 1KD's for sale in the UK, they seem to be pretty affordable over there.

You're crazy.

LN106 with a 1KD. That would be my jam. :). (Look: Both of us would like to replace our 2LT-Es with 1KDs!)

I'm following for the same reason. If I can figure out the engine control then the rest of it would fall into place lace nicely. :)

I'll be sure to keep this thread updated with progress. I hope to have the lump started this weekend....

When I was searching the UK seemed to be the most expensive, I was quoted 4-7000£ for an engine package. I looked at Australia and found a few wreckers that would put an engine package together for me. But in the end, I found a great guy on gumtree AU selling the lump and trans as a package. I contacted him and negotiated a price of about $3200USD for everything, shipping ran me another $1100..
