So I re-capped this radio (08600-00014) and powered it up while monitoring the temp around the audio output transistors, and it got very hot. Tore it back down and tested those diodes and they were out of spec a good bit. Also tested the other PCB mounted diodes and they were right on. Replacements for testing are in the mail.

It was DOA, looking further it has an open trace on the power input board, this is weird.

Thanks to @Engineer8000 and his repair work, I have an as-new working ~1974 AM radio in my '78 FJ40. The POs bent back the OEM radio brackets, so with some hammering and prying, the radio is installed as it would have been at the factory on those tabs, with bolts. I get 5 strong stations - one for each preset.

finally a real nice period correct face plates solution exists , injection molded exactly how TOYOTA made them 5 decades ago ....

The community needs the knobs (I know there are some 3D printed options out there, but they're not close enough in my opinion) as well as the above face plate with the option, "TUNER". TUNE was for the later National radio 79-8X and frequency began at 53. The earlier National radios (75-78) had a "TUNER" naming convention and freq. started at 54. The Fujitsu TEN radios had a faceplate like the one @SteveH shows above in his photo, correct for that radio.

i DO not see @SteveH 's faceplate often ?

UNICORNS can be Kloned , if you have a solid nive grade A willing donor ....



are you saying that @SteveH ' s plate has a TUNER variant , or my injection molded one does , or both ?

some SOLID clear TECH images , would be good eye candy to study up on here , providing @Engineer8000 , is OK , ? with the discussion here , or maybe a stand alone TECH tread on 40 face plates or in the RADIOS SUB FORUM too ?

Generally speaking, starting in 1973 radios were either A) Factory/Port equipped National (PIO (port installed options) sticker in the glove box indicated) or B) Fujitsu Ten dealership installed. @SteveH above has the correct "Dealer-Installed" Fujitsu Ten 08600-00014 for a mid 70's FJ40. The knobs and faceplate on his specimen are correct for that radio.

The faceplate you have re-created, @ToyotaMatt covers: 86120-60020 (79-81), 86120-60021 (82). Big window, flat buttons. They changed the radio nearly completely for 1983.
