PZ vs HZ

I've just asked a similar question and was directed here by @jmlockwood .

Sounds as though the better choice, all things being equal, may well be the 1HZ, but when are things ever equal? :) 1PZ also seems a reasonable option.

I believe I'll set my sights on either a shorter (74 would be my first choice) PZ, or 76/77 1HZ, Manual trans in either case. I drove a 4D56 Mitsubishi Strada pickup for a few years, non-intercooled, at around 90 HP, so 115HP doesn't sound horrible.

For those who've driven both, could you put a fine point on the difference in range, if possible? One poster above said 750-800 kms per tank was possible in the 1PZ. If a similar rig was 1HZ equipped, what would you the estimate the distance would be? My commute is 80kms each way on quiet backroads, where I can sit on 105km/h all day if I want.

Like anything, I would get the nicest shape cruiser that you can afford. The 1PZ was around much shorter, the 1HZ is still being made and will have parts for a long time.

As for the 73/74. They didn't come with the 1PZ as far as I know. Only the 1HZ, 13BT, 3B and VM motorri (stay away)

I will say, I wouldn't want any less power than a 13BT in a 73/74. I'd be alright with a 1HZ, but pretty sure I would turbo it. :D

Probably the best advice you'll receive.

Toyota did make a PZJ73. They seem to be from island type countries for the most part originally but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the great input all. I've read from this forum off and on for a long time (since before @crushers moved away from Alberta!), but until a few weeks ago I never had a Toyota. We recently got my wife a replacement for her LWB Pajero Mk3 in the form of a UZJ100, which she loves. And of course it got me wondering and looking for my own daily, so here I am.

Either an HZ or PZ may replace my own SWB Pajero Mk3. We'll see?

Anyways, appreciate the feedback.

I checked the JDM catalog, and you appear to be correct. Iterations of PZJ77 and PZJ70 only. Oh well...

When I look at the catalog for PZJ73, it seems to come as either 4 speed manual soft top or 5 speed manual hard top. 5 speed is only for Australian market while the rest get the 4 speed manual.
