Pumpkin 40 Roller paint job

It's 9:30 pm and just did the dash and the inside windshield frame. I used the Tower spray cans to do that. Doing in between the knobs etc would have taken forever with a brush and wet-sanding in there....forget it. Went back with the can to hit all the small/tight areas that the rollers and brush wouldn't go. Well worth it. Since I had the gallon of paint matched to the spray cans it's all exact.

My dash is junk so I really half-assed it. Still looks great!!!

Wet-sanding to come.....

I've done all this in basically 2 full days. Not bad IMHO.

Replacing the Bed liner??? You have no idea how long it took me to get some in green! Painting the rollcage was a mistake. I scraped my knuckles a few time on it. Other than that I miss it but have 76 coming.

Ha! I thought it was a cool color but having a green interior on a pumpkin truck would be odd. I sprayed it with black rustoleum. Looks like new!

The rollcage won't be too bad to clean up. I actually like using the old grinder anyway.

Anything else you can tell me about it???? It's a great truck!

I have a similar color on mine. MOre fleet orange than pumpkin. THought I had pics, deleted my last post. Yours looks great!

I kinda liked the green, But orange? Very interesting

If I end up hating it, it only cost me $68 in supplies so I could easily switch it back......but I doubt I will

x2 was it the original paint?

Nope. Original paint was the usual tan/sand color. I had a 1980 VJ40 that was tan and it got old after a while. I always liked the pumpkin color so that's what i went with. Purely a selfish whim.

Let's face it, it's a beautiful rust free truck but it's a 72 with an F engine and a 3 speed. Originality wouldn't mean much in the long run so why not paint it another color. It's an original color offered that year using the official toyota paint code so I don't think I'm completely insane.

I don't think your paint color choice has anythingto do with your insanity :) we need some update pics!!!
i think it is lookin ggood.

John,

A couple of things:
1) You probably are crazy, but not for the reasons stated here.
2) I believe the original color of the truck was Rustic Green, not tan/sand. What makes you think it was tan?
3) I am amazed that you got the PO Mike Gavin to make his first post on Mud. Hey Mike!
4) My understanding of it's history is that Mike imported it sight unseen from CA in around 1998. It is a factory original softtop and the bows and rings are all original. Mike did the OME springs, the bed liner, the (unfortunate) rollcage liner, a new exhaust, a very nice brake job, and some sort of valve work that resulted in the nicely-repainted valve cover. I got it from Mike in about 2003. I added the front bumper (from LobsterFab), the rear bumper (from me and Randy), the sliders (from me and Randy), the softtop (from STC), the paint job (by me via rattle can), the side mirror (SOR), and a set of hard doors (from Tedd at cruiser solutions). I added the radio and speakers. I also put on LTBs, but sold them to Mark (aka sattelitesound) just prior to putting on the Swampers that you now have. I also did some work to the carb to make it run right (it would stall at very unfortunate times when I first go it due to clogging of that hidden filter), swapped the clutch master and slave and replaced the rear axle seals.
5) You can blame the CA owner or his predecessors for the hack job on the dash and the c.b. radio antenna hole in the side.

Wow! That's Bright!

Wish i had the patience to do that.

Urinal in the shop is good too!

Dan

I really don't have much patience but the winter is long here and there isn't much else to do when it's below freezing. Garage has a heater so it makes drying the paint and the actual painting very comfortable.

That's cool.... Never thought to use a paint roller. When I saw the post first, I thought you meant a rolling paint job, like the truck had wheels on it and wasn't sitting on blocks! Then I saw the paint roller... well, I think you're nuts painting that nice green over, but you like it and it's yours man so enjoy it :D

I can hardly wait to eventually have a big garage to tear down my old FJ40 and begin restoring it. Gonna be fun for sure!

Yours looks OSHA-approved from the pics I've seen.

The green paint was perfectly fine and was actually very nice. Just didn't want green.
