Yeah man. Road force tomorrow ..$30 a tire. Will report results!

Went to Mr. Tire down from my work. They noticed some minor uneven wear on tires....put it on Road force and they didn't know how to use it, but for sure it was bouncing around on the equipment. Stumped here since there is good tread left...might get a second opinion where they know how to work the equipment. I assumed that Rod Force would give you some info on tire.

I could swap tires with a friend...but that is some work and coordination.

Yeah ..sad these days. Going to call my trusty tire shop tomorrow that has experience. Not sure if they have road force, but maybe could do the tire shaving route....if that is still a thing.

Did some reading on tire rack.com. If you introduce a tire with more tread, it could cause issues. I started a 5 tire rotation after the first four had some wear...tires are all the same brand so I didn't think it mattered.

Regardless of what I learn with new road force inspection, I will swap wheels with my buddy to see if it is the tires. ..will be a couple weeks due to work travel etc. I will report when I know more. Appreciate it guys!

Totally fine to roll your spare into the mix so long as you haven't had significant wear on the others. Example: rotating in before you hit 10k miles on a typical all terrain and you should be in the clear.

I've had decent work done at discount tire on dynamic balancing.

Shave the tires...?

Lets back up- whats the story with the t

Shaving tires? Whats the back story here on the tires: Age of tires, how many miles, how often rotated, did you buy new and have them installed or did you buy them used ie they came on the truck? Are the wheels stock?

Thanks abuck99 for walking with me on this!

So; the tires have plenty of tread left...and they are like $1200 for a set...so trying to avoid early replacement. But as i research more on the life of the tires...it might be time for replacements.

I bought the truck with the tires on. What I gather is that they were at least installed new at 165k miles (Toyo AT2 X-Treme 295/70R18 on Tundra Steelies). I currently have 230k miles on the truck...so 65K miles on tires is pretty good!! I rotate them every 10k miles and added the 5th tire into the rotation plan at 215k miles...this could be why I am having issues....thought i could get more life out of the tires by introducing the spare.

Before I do anything else, I plan to visit my local respectable tire shop for 2nd opinion and try road force if they have it (small town...) and/or swap tires with a friend to confirm tires are the issue. Once I isolate that the tires are in fact done; i can proceed with confidence. Again; lots of tread left!! I could use them as a spare set when I go wheeling and not risk damaging new ones!!!

Thanks

Getting a 2nd opinion on your tires with 65k miles on them- that's a colossal wast of time.:bang: Replace and then report back.

Anybody tried fixing driveline vibes by replacing the front differential control arm that attaches to the cross member?

The bushing inside mine looks worn so that the diff sits at a different angle than it would be with a new bushing. Maybe they all sit like this new? Thinking of replacing to see if it helps cure my driveline vibration that starts at 60-65 under low loads and disappears under hard acceleration.

Hahaha!!! I guess I didn't realize how many miles were on these...and $1200 is a lot of cash!
So...vibs gone...with new tires!! Crazy. Lesson learned...even if your tires have been balanced and have decent tread left doesn't mean they are okay internally. I think the 6 year age and 65k miles were enough to start feeling flaws in the tire due to age.

Abuck99 was spot on.

Went with Cooper Discoverer AT3s...super happy

See my troubleshooting efforts above... definitely learned a lot about pinion angle and Propeller shaft inspections etc.

Now I have a coolant leak at the radiator top seam...at least that is quick and easy to fix!!

Man, this kind of stuff drives me nuts, and reading on this forum doesnt help....now theres 5 or 6 things that could be wrong. I have the droning noise that parallels wheel speed. But thats it, just the noise. I have no vibrations or shaking from it. Its getting close to time to repack wheel bearings and grease the spindle bearings. Yes, just did a couple offroad trips, yes, there were water crossings. Yes, I drove on pavement 20 minutes or so (all under 45mph) with 18-20psi. Tires have 30K miles on them...havent been rotated in 10K miles (my bad)...I lifted the front end, snap ring in place, 12 and 6 on the wheel have no play at all. I check temps with IR gun on hub flanges and even after super heavy breaking to set new pads they were only 90 degrees at their hottest (70-80 otherwise). And yes, new pads put on, no grooves in rotors, no pulsing or swerving during braking. So I guess I have no choice other than to repack and grease bearings and spindle, remove front driveshaft and test drive, remove rear driveshaft and test drive, then road force balance tires? Is there any particular order I should do these in? Also...this may be relevant or not...but two wheeling trips (end of oct ago I bent my passenger rear lower control arm....this droning noise just started last week. But again its noise, there's no vibration or feeling.

To me it sounds like the noise is coming from the front, but it sounds like @ClassyJalopy and others thought the same when it ended up being rear driveshaft.

A drive shaft won't make a droning noise - I think. I'd say since your bearings are about due for a repack, start from there. See if the claw washer has any wear on it. It usually gets grooved when bearing have play in them.

Second thing to check would be moving both front hub flanges and front driveshaft and see if it is cured.

I thought the droning sound comes from wheel bearing as well. If the drive shafts are out of balance, it makes a noise with vibration. That is what I got experienced from the front drive shaft. :) After rebalancing it, the sound almost disappeared, but there is still slight booming sound around 65~70 mph.

I am waiting for new OEM rear drive shaft now. After installing it without the front drive shaft, I will double check it.

Alright, last night I took apart the drivers side and theyre admittedly...not great, but I cleaned everything out, packed them with grease, greased the needle bearing really good....and the noise sounds exactly the same, like no different. Drivers I assumed would not be great because this is the side that the axle slip out this summer and you can see some damage on the spindle surface. But even if the bearings are not great I would have thought repacking would do something to the noise. It could still be the passenger side and it could be I guess that the needle bearing is just shredded and I need to replace that. So I ordered 2 needle bearings, 2 needle brass bushing, 2 seals and 2 sets of races, wheel bearings, and seals.

Wheel bearings items come today, but spindle-needle bearing kit doesnt come till Friday...however I kinda need the car. So the bearings are packed with grease, the spindles greased, the breakaway is right, its the smoothest spin but nothing crazy, and again there was no play in the bearing so they weren't loose. So I'm debating if I can drive to work 25 miles x2 a day Friday and replace the spindle bearing and see if that takes care of the noise.

Welp, guess I should probably do the responsible thing and drive 2 hrs to fredericksburg to get a used kunckle/spindle assembly for $80. Car it came off had 230K...wondering if I should grab the passenger one while I'm there with my luck....

Here's the spindle 🤦‍♂️, might have undersold the damage...obviously seal failed and water got in, plus some pretty good heat and gouging of the surface mostly from axle slipping a while back...guess its hard to know what is ongoing damage and what was from a one time event. Pic does kinda make it look worse...but its also pretty bad...

Welp, at least you know what needs to be fixed!

Hopefully, I'm going to fall to ground crying if I do this and the noise is still there. Or if my spindle bearing is anything other than destroyed. I ordered some parts from CruiserTeq some from Mcgeorge Toyota and some from Rockauto so now its just trying to figure when its all coming in...and how to get to work until then.
