Engine bay cleaned up. Not taking it too far (it’s a true driver / trail build) but the engine bay was a bit unsightly before.

Johnny & crew at @Cruisers and Co washed, sanded, acetoned, scuffed, acetoned, primed, and painted the engine bay, and will cover all that next week with a 2 part clear. They’re also going to touch-up the core support.

This really looks great!

My fear is that I would ultimately lose track of all the little items that need to be removed to do this correctly...

Lots of photos! Fortunately for us we have a blank slate and almost nothing original is going back because of the 1FZ-FTE

Ah yes, both of those will be in your favor.
It will be nice to start with a clean slate for the 1FZ install!

but …. So, what’s the 80 roller for?
- strongest frame
- strongest axles (but upgraded)
- best suspension (but upgraded)
- best brakes (but upgraded)

fzj80 wheelbase: 2,850 millimeters (112.2 inches)
fj55 wheelbase: 2,700 millimeters (106.3 inches)

So. @Cruisers and Co chops 150mm (5.9 inches) out of the frame, welds it back together, and then the fun parts of the fab (transmission mount, fuel tank, radiator, exhaust, bumpers/sliders, some pieces we have in mind to bring to production for 80 series, …) can start

Goal is a fzj55 with a turbo 1fz-fe, 5-speed, doubler, lockers, etc, in time for Cruise Moab, and then SAS 9 (“no, it’s the same truck I had here last year…” 🤣)

I still hope to bring batpig to PP25, but if it’s not ready, then I’ll bring Tua’a.

See, what you didn’t ask is what I’m going to do with the 55 roller…

I have the following pieces that I was going to use on this build before we went “big”:
So I need to clean/paint the frame, set the springs and axles, plumb the brakes, rebuild the steering linkage & steering box, rebuild the split case from the abandoned 40 project, fit the 2F/h55f/split case to the frame, fit the header, go fetch the 79 from Jon in Tulsa, assemble body to frame, build an exhaust, add some electric PS love from City Racer, (or just run it manual), get it all working, including the DENSO AC that came with the 79, move the bumpers and other powder coated pieces to this truck, (Pua’a Tua’a will need custom bumpers now), install the glass, install the interior, add sounds, ...

I’m sure I’m forgetting a ton.

End result should be a true driver.
  • 79 body / 74 frame
    • DENSO AC
    • Scheelmann front row
    • Factory second row
  • 4.4L Mosley 2F
    • Carillo rods & pisons
    • Sniper EFI w/timing control
    • Tri-meki header
  • H55F / split case
  • 60 series axles with IFS hubs to pull the wheels in a bit and a Tundra disc brake upgrade, RCV birfs and inners. Rear has discs w/parking brakes, both have ARB lockers & 3.70:1 gears
  • Dobinsons springs & shocks, 1.75” lift
  • 33s on city racer 16” wheels

“Just one more”, says every addict, ever.

Wow, that will be a cream puff of a Pig...

"Just one more", and "This will be the last time, I SWEAR!"

LOL
