I made some progress this weekend. I got almost all of the Styrofoam out of the body! I found some expanding foam also. WTF is up with people using expanding foam on vehicles? I have seen entire frames filled with it.
Last picture is the tools I used for the foam removal should someone end up with a Styrofoam infested truck in the future.

I found some PO patches and some rust. The first picture is looking up the driver side rear most pillar. Not sure if that is insulation or expanding foam in there. The second is the driver side rear wheel well. Not the best patch as I can see through to the garage floor. Lastly, both sides of the tailgate have patches. A big one on the passenger side, probably from when it was hit in the rear. It looks like they welded in galvanized sheet if I did not know any better. I did the magnet trick and there is a fair amount of bondo in the rear quarters and tailgate.

How's the demoldifying going?

Thanks, Dan

Very well, the garage smells 100% better. The wife noticed right away. I am cleaning the interior slowly as I go of the dirt layer. You can see in the pictures every surface is covered in in brown / reddish dirt.

Looks like they used the expanding foam as a backup for the bondo! BAD IDEA as it holds water and just keeps on corroding!

That will be tough to get out but you'll need to to do a proper repair. Maybe someone knows if there is something that will "eat" the expanding foam with causing further damage.

I was watching the Power Block on Sunday and the douche bags on Trucks suggested that if you have to run electical wires through your frame for some reason (be it battery cable, stereo wires ect.) that after they are all ran fill your frame with expandable foam to prevent them from moving around and wearing a bald patch in the insulation. wow talk about a run on sentence.

Seems like welding in some tabs and securing them that way would be a lot cleaner and easier to me.

Nope. That stuff is designed to be solvent resistant. That's the lure for most applications. Dig it out. That's all you can do.

These guys probably keep a vehicle for 2-3 years max and in that time there is not going to be enough rust to worry about. For us who are trying to keep a 30+ year old vehicle alive rust becomes a BIG issue!!

This 55 has a MAF "PowerPack" installed that replaced the stock carb, distributor, fuel pump, coil and igniter. I am pretty sure the carb is a Rochester but don't have a clue what any of the other parts are from. My neighbor had the literature for this kit from the PO the first time I looked at the truck but is unable to find it now. I have contacted Steve at MAF who so far has been unable to find any literature about this particular "PowerPack". Can anyone identify the distributor?

Howdy! IIRC, I looked at this setup for my 72 FJ-40, back about 25 years ago. It is a Delco dist from a 6 cyl Chevy. No vacuum advance, all centrifical. Not so hot of a setup, as the total advance available is about 6 - 10 less than ideal. If you advance the baseline timing to get it up on the top, then you loose low end/crawl performance. Rumor was that the Delco was retro fit with a Toyota dist drive gear, it still didn't fit real well. Tended to wear out gear/ stop pumping oil, or something like that?? John

Hey John Boy!

check out the tech links- I had Woody put in my door panel files for the 55...just take them over to a place that has a cnc router, and they can cut the door panels for ya....

It is definitely going back to a two tone paint job but I am not sure I want to keep it the stock green and white code 277 combo. This all white paint job I am pretty sure is the result of it being an AZ truck. I have noticed some 55s have the roof white while others are the contrasting color of the truck. Are both stock or have many people painted the roof white to keep the interior cooler?

Brian, thanks for putting together those files. Unfortunately, I doubt there is any place in the DC Metro area who could produce them.

John, is the bucket on your truck plastic? The one I picked up from the wrecker (c/w lens and chrome trim) is plastic but it is an OEM Toyota part. I also got a fuel door with lock.

The bucket is good, the lens has a crack or two and a small bite out of one corner and the trim has a scrape. The left side was ALOT better than the right!

My bucket is grey plastic and that one sounds like it is much better condition than mine. Great news on the fuel door also!
