Pretty quiet in here... what are you working on?

A lot of updates to provide from the past few months...This brutal winter really slowed on progress on the FJ80 because I work outside. In the last month or so, I finished installing my new radiator, fan clutch, and water pump. Rebuilt my leaky power steering pump (which still seems to leak but maybe leaks less now?). And I even got the sound working in my truck in 3 of the 5 speakers - I am happy with that for now. I changed the oil last week and continued to chase down intermittent coolant leaks and loss.

Since my oil change 2 weeks/50 miles ago, my oil turned into a dreaded chocolate milk color indicating coolant contamination. Sigh. The oil in the truck prior to that was brownish but not the color of a latte/chocolate milk. The irony is that I was buttoning up the other parts of the leaky coolant system the past few weeks because of the intermittent coolant loss, which seems to have raised the overall operating pressure of the system exposing the coolant/oil mixing problem. In a way, I am actually glad because I suspected this for the past 6 months but couldn't prove it through looking at oil color, compression test, and radiator exhaust gas test.

I called a local shop and they quoted me 2k - 2.5k. I am guessing parts and machining alone would cost me around $1k if I did it myself. I think I could do it myself but I am not excited about taking on a big job in my parking lot at the moment. I am too busy with a lot of other things.

What do you guys think of my situation? Pay for it, do it myself, did I miss anything in my analysis?

2.5k is insanely cheap for an 80 head gasket! How many miles are on it? If it's higher mileage you may be better off looking at a reman engine. 4/5 of the last head jobs that came through here, the head was too warped to machine. That used to be rare but we're seeing it way more often lately. Trying to find a good used head can be difficult and expensive. If you end up tackling it, we've got a full series for it on YouTube. It's not a super difficult job just time consuming.

geez, that does suck dude. Doing a head gasket in a parking lot doesn't seem very appealing either, BUT, it seems like there are plentiful references for you if you do tackle it. I am rooting for you whichever way you go.

I admit I am skeptical that price is correct lol. I am going to get that in writing before committing. The last time I used this place they verbally quoted me for 1,500 for a rear diff rebuild which included only the pinion bearings and carrier bearings and they came in at 1600 with an alignment I added.

If their quote ends up a lot more than 2,500 then I start getting into the territory where I would just do it myself. The thing I am afraid of here is opening it up and finding a lot more problems than I expected.

To answer your questions... I am working with a '91 w/ the 3FE with 285k miles. If I go toward the reman route, it would seem a shame to throw another dog of a 3FE in there. Then again, I don't really want to spend $10k plus. But I am open to exploring this if it makes sense.

Ahh, 3fe is completely different. I always jump to 1fz since we hardly see 3fe's anymore. 3fe is way easier and the 2500ish starts making more sense.

Also….. while OTRAMM is in here, how in the WORLD do I detach the cluster in the 40 from the speedo cable. There is a ridged metal fitting against a plastic housing on the back…. But there aren’t tabs or anything. Does that metal collar unscrew. I’m trying to chase down a grounding issue on the high beam bulb and need more real estate to work.
Anybody?

Some of them unscrew, it'll be a mirror of what it looks like at the transfer case. Some have a latching clip that is super awkward to feel and detach. The cable can be a bear to remove on either style.

Thanks!

I’m 99% mine on the early 72 is an unscrew. I’m gonna need some baby channel locks …. My fingers gave up

On the bright side…… there are now only two electric functions not working. Transfer indicator, reverse light, and gotta ground the high beam bulb.

Heaters too. Gotta wire those up.

Getting packed up and ready to roll out tomorrow for Cruise Moab! Should be an amazing trip...caravanning out with @imperium and looking forward to wheeling and boarding up with @TTViper , @DC470 , and Alec (Paul's brother)...oh yeah, @An3 will be my co-pilot too!

Most likely I'll be leaving the cruiser out in Salida on the way back...I'll make plans later to retrieve her either by another summer trip out or transport. I'm also looking forward to meeting the guys from @Cruisers and Co to discuss my 5 speed upgrade...it may be seeing them too, we'll see!

Cleanest she'll be now for a while...

Well, after a long association with an 80 by the Good Woman, and the patience of Job ( in my opinion by myself anyway) heading off many and innumerable Euro interlopers suggestions, “we” finally got to add another Landcruiser to the garage! And of course old man time… right time, vehicle, price etc etc
