so, where are the pics of your deep water crossings ?

Oh, I don't have any... Just preparing for the worst... Tom (@lostmarbles) posted this... "The Worst"...

So I for one would love to hear how people vent the transmission. I've searched but had no luck finding even a single example of the transmission breather being extended.

On my transfer case there are two breathers. One is for the vacuum shift operated lever in a separate housing on the transfer case. I'm not sure if this is a common arrangement but if so not extending the breather can lead to problems. In fact I think it ruined my transfer case due to the linkage only moving halfway. Have a look at this link you can see the breather.

Shift Diaphagm linkage- fixed

Pete

Thanks for the link And info Pete!!

shift tower boot is the vent on the trans, so if you want to raise the vent ,you need to seal the boot and you could drill and tap on the top plate of the trans and use a diff vent

or an oil transfer hose from t-case and trans can make the trans vent with the t-case

Thanks Jim!!

By "oil transfer hose", are you saying that if a t-case-to-transfer bypass hose attaches the fill plug from the t-case to the tranny, the tranny will be vented through the t-case vent? Then, all that's needed is to seal the shift tower boot and raise the t-case breather to the higher location?

So, I've been looking at my snorkel and planning the installation. The template sucks, but I can figure it out.

I'm surprised, though, that the snorkel needs to be cut thru the apron almost exactly where the carb cooling fan output tube rests.

This means I will need to either remove the carb cooling fan entirely, or modify it to move the output tube out of the way.

Is this conflict normal, or is my snorkel different?

This picture shows the conflict... I've drawn a circle where I need to cut the snorkel through... You can see the carb cooling fan output tube just inside the apron.

That is the normal spot that i have seen...

IMO the most important things and the ones that will be most possibly infiltrated are the axles and cases

I never get much deeper than this:

But... Others do get deep... I've always like the look of a snorkel and like its functionality :)

I am planning on removing my snorkel. I don't foresee any deep water crossings in my future and on my last wheeling trip, I almost wiped out my windshield on a tree. I'm the northeast, the trails are tight and lined with trees. Folding down the windshield is a must and it can't be done with a snorkel.

Thanks @JohnnyC !

Sorry to hear that Alex... I don't have that problem here. But, if you want to keep it, how about adding a slip joint below the windshield hinge? Then you could keep the Snorkle, but shorten it when you need to fold the windshield down.

But, my thread title needs a change... I haven't been able to find much in the way of water to ford... I've forded one creek almost three dozen times and barely got my rims wet. I'm really adding the snorkel to draw in cool air in the summer heat.

But, I will raise the vents on my axles and cases, just in case...

Have you considered mounting a large filter on the driver side fender like was used by the military?
Coolest cleanest air you can get, out of the way and easy to do.

Are you talking about "with" a snorkel or "in place of" a snorkel? Pics?

I have the snorkel and parts already initially, I will install the snorkel and connect it to the stock '78 air cleaner... I'll see how that goes and may end up adding a box, with filter, between the snorkel and carb, using a cobra head... or continuing to use the air cleaner as well.

That's too deep.. Unless it's the only way out.

Guess I need to figure out how to vent my pants too!

Danny, not to worry, use your inflated pants as a buoyancy compensator to keep your "head" above water!:hillbilly:
