Getting ready to work on power steering leaks on my 2001. Just turned both clamps at the reservoir which noticeably tightened the return line. Suction line has leaked at the top but appears to have leaked more at the bottom connection - tried to turn bottom clamp but it's a little tough to get in there from above or below. There's a plastic shield in the fender well that can be removed but I'll save that until hose replacement (any tips on removal and reinstall of those plastic pins?).
There are a few threads that mention replacing the 5/8" i.d. suction line and 3/8" i.d. return line but nothing definitive for me. I stopped by NAPA yesterday and looked at 3/8" oil cooler line and 5/8" 'fuel vapor' hose that the guy said was a hydraulic hose and would work. I emphasized it was a suction line for power steering and he maintained that it would work. Should have grabbed the part numbers but didn't. I suppose the hose could have been stuck in a different box. Compared to stock it was a bit flexible so not sure if it would collapse upon suction.
I've looked at the Wit's End options and am looking local to see what best option is to replace both. Have also considered OEM on suction side and Gates hose for return.
For low pressure lines; reinforced transmission oil cooler hose would probably work. I think working pressure 250psi +/- You can bend it but recommended not sharper than 3" bend ( usually stated on the hose).
For high pressure lines the Sunsong replacement available on RA is a pretty good value.
