Return lines

Recently did this hose replacement with the same NAPA parts. The hi pres line is fine but the low pres lines are leaky, minor but leaky. Not sure if the 3/8" is a bit big or if my hose clamps leave an uneven point.

Anyone got a line on the OEM style PS hose clamps? Btw, the long low pres line is still available thru Toyota. I believe it's <$20. And I suspect it's 8mm not 3/8in. or 9.4875mm. Anyone know?

Mark - thanks for the Amazon link - that's a steal for those PS filters. I think I was quoted $26 at NAPA years ago for that filter (or an equivalent).

The return hose is 10mm on 81-newer trucks. 3/8" works.

It is 8mm (5/16") on 80-earlier trucks.

Too bad MAFs website is still in limbo - they used to have a tranny/PS cooler that fits perfectly on the side of the radiator support and is far more efficient than that tube that runs under the radiator ...

I'll see if I can find it somewhere else...

Looks like that Hayden should work fine. IN/Out ports are 3/8, too, so just need to splice into the line...

Super happy with the vendor...Ordered on the 3rd, arrived on the 5th - free shipping too!

Larger than I expected, and very solid/heavy plastic.

SS: Thanks for the product recommendation!

I run large transmission coolers on both of my rigs.

OK I guess I don't quite understand the need for a PSP filter? Is there a way that contaminants can get into it or are we just talking about filtering out wear products from the steering box and PSP itself?

Agree, we never use a filter.

Have to be somewhat careful with coolers, you want the system to get to operating temp, it's easy to over cool, especially important in cooler climates. In some applications, the oe mounts the cooler under the hood, so fan output is blowing on it, warms the fluid in cold weather.

Our favorite coolers are OEM, pick & pull. Some of the Lexus models have very nice PS coolers. Where space is an issue, our favorite is off a Ford Explorer, AT, it is a nice stack plate type and very thin, fits FJ40s well. Works great in the desert, maybe big for cooler climates?

I am in the process of doing the NAPA hoses. Ordered my pressure hose today. I did the cit-to-fit return lines thanks to this thread. Here is me being nit picky. Is it just me or does the space aged tin foil heat wrap bag on the NAPA hose look cheap and cheesy?

Anyone cut their OEM one off their old hose and swap out? I figure you could slice it down the side and put it on the NAPA hose and tape it up with some heat tape or zip tie it on. Just wondering.

Nice work Kevin.

I am getting ready to install an 80 series tranny cooler into my 60 for the PS as well.

Yowza, that a big cooler for P/S, likely way too much?

Hi, I've never needed a power steering cooler . Can you tell me what application this is used for ? Thanks, Mike

Tools,
What's the issue if the cooler is too large ?

I am guessing the fluid doesn't heat up...but is that harmful ?

Thanks...and I have learned a lot over the years from your posts.

Big tires & rock crawling puts a lot of strain on the PS pump - it has to work hard for extended periods causing the fluid to heat up. Stock cooling tubes might not be able to keep up.
