My progressive bifocals sometimes fail to compensate for the fact that my arms are too short.
I just used the "arms too short" quip this very day, Lol

RTH I just did my pump and have the tick. I pulled it back off and am ready to reseat the gear. I used a spacer to get the first seat. But I guess it was not right. Does anyone have a measurement or advice on how to get it? Can I drive it with the tick. I am moving 700 miles in the morning and have to have it fixed.

If it's a tick from the pump gear, then driving it will not hurt it at all. It will be annoying.

The 80 has a bad habit of not complaining until it is in a great deal of pain. The platform was so over engineered that it does not usually complain until it is in grave trouble. Preventive action will keep an 80 operable for many years.
The importance of preventive action should absolutely not be discounted.

So I recently replaced my pump for the third time this year:

  1. The first time was replacing the (probably) original pump. I replaced it with an A1CarDone rebuilt pump.
  2. That pump failed on the highway and lost all the fluid 2k miles later. I patched it up and got home, and replaced it with a free warranty pump, another rebuilt one.
  3. That pump leaked from the rear basically immediately, 5 days and 30 miles later all the fluid was gone. I replaced it with a new Toyota pump. My two previous pumps were both refunded, so no loss there.
Was CDan ever so prophetic when he said:

I hope people find it useful. It goes along in tandem with this thread.

Well, I was getting ready to tackle this job with a reman, but have decided on heeding CDan’s advice, and will be returning this pump for a new one. 😉

@NLXTACY is the pump gear tool ready for purchase? Didn’t see it on the site. I’m doing the pump, cooler and hose replacement job this week and wouldn’t mind using the tool bling if you got it! Thanks

Ordered thanks!

So I’m going to order a new pump from Norwalk Toyota. The pump 44320-60182, o-ring 90301-73004, but the high pressure gasket 44327-30030, says it’s not the right part. Does anyone know the correct part # for a 94FZJ80? I would call, but I’m told I won’t get the same online pricing.

44327-30030 is the correct part number, quantity 1.

If the wheel becomes hard to turn at times (like in a parking lot or when off-roading) is that typically the pump dying or is it the gearbox?

Hi Vapilotda,
Did you ever get a response or work out if the hard to turn ( say when parking) is the the steering pump or steering box ? I have same problem with my LC 2000 HZJ105
Thanks,
Dom

I have not gotten a response but am going to take a guess at the pump because it gets stronger when not idling. I don't have any leaks but with 240k on both the pump and box, I'm guessing it's just tired. I hate to throw parts at it without a proper diagnosis but they are high mileage parts and are probably both due for a refresh.

Thanks for you reply Vapilotda😊
I also had some air which “I think “ I fixed today. To do this I removed the reservoir to clean the screen by soaking and flushing with petrol. Also replaced low pressure hoses with good truck hydraulic hoses and good SS screw clamps but I still need to take it for a test run to see if I still have very heavy steering when parking. If still a problem I will try fitting a new seal kit for the pump. I must remember to post if the work done today solves the issue or the seal kit solves the issue.
Cheers,
Dom

Is a 94 LC a different pump than what is shown here? I dont think mine is the one with the gear, I was told its one that uses the pulley.

And find a different mechanic. It does not have a pulley. It is a 1FZ-FE engine.

The only ones with pulleys are the 91-92 years with the 3FE.

Did you ever resolve your issue? was it the pump or the gearbox?

Thank you @Romer for starting this thread 12 years ago. What a resource this site is!

Y'all weren't joking about that click when the gear isn't seated enough. When I pull the pump back out this week to press the gear on further, I'll try to get before and after measurements.
