I tell ya that whole area of the FJ60s is frugged up.
First the pump leak was causing repeated smog pump failures.
New pump....$$$...problem solved.
Stupid smog pumps are pos. They still went south even with
no leak NEW pump above them.
$$$OR to the rescue. That sucker is gone and I can still adjust
the belt tightness. Costly "fix".
Today the *&^%$$$ power steering pump just started spewing
fluid everywhere at the output shaft. Poor wife was driving
solo at the time. Good girl. Pulled into station immediately.
I mean...dang...new pump ordered..here tomorrow ,but that whole "area" of
Cruiser Werks has been a pain in the arse the whole time we've owned the 60.
Don't get me wrong, I love Big.
Just hoping this is the LAST time I'm working in this area.
Ohm...cruiser,cruiser,cruiser...Ohm

I think FJ60 and FZJ80 power steering systems are about as crappy as they come compared to the price tag of these vehicles new. Toyota really dropped the ball on these systems.

David it sounds like it is time to go old school and roll FJ40 style with no power steering

I hear ya pal! Ol Gundy has no power steering...just a steering wheel big enough for a bus.
Easily turns them 33x9.5s.
:grinpimp:
Heck it was just a few years back I bought the 40 a new steering box. With a 72 that is
some box. Steering shaft comes with the box. One piece unit. Not even a rag joint.
It is strange to have a stock box 40 and so little steering play.
It used to be about a 1/4 turn to get movement. Even the new box (NOS item I lucked upon)
it ain't rack and pinion.

I'm telling ya if this 60 box situation goes south ONE more time...it's Saginaw time.

so i have to replace mine next week. I hope it works out after reading this post.

Hey David you can just take the guts out of the smog pump and replace the bearings. Takes about an hr to do and should last forever with some sealed bearings.

BTDT more than once on more than two trucks. Smog pump=POS.
$OR sold this needle bearing, alloy adjustable bracket and pulley
to remove that POS pump and still have belt adjustment. Trick stuff.
Highly illegal most everywhere. I doubt they still sale them in this climate
of worry about climates.
Big got lean and mean. No smog, no cat. Weber and header.
Lord, it'll probably have to go to the Nothing for Clunckers
but Crusher Program one day soon.
Till then......I love the old clunker.
It is a Legend.....it's a Cruiser.
Our lightly armored personnel carrier.
Pump came in today. I'm going to let the local boys put it on Monday.
I just don't have the time.
The tubular alloy panhard rod and 3/4 inch tube/alloy anti-sway bar for Mimi
is much more pressing on my "car time allotment".
I still have to dyno tune the new carbs and the paint job is in a delay pattern.

WOW.....as I typed the shop rang.....8:00 a.m. the lift is open and the panhard
rod is going on. Yee Haaa

David where do you get your work and dyne tunes from?

Tad at TK Motorsports let me use one of his lifts and welded the hiem joint bung for me at no cost.
The guys at Pace and Reeves in Pickens will install the 60's ps pump Monday and they are very reasonable.
Hap at Acme Speed Shop is going to do the SU HS4s trick tune. He's building an awesome GT
with a kick butt trick motor. He builds racing engines for people all over the country....errr...WORLD.
Uber skills as a performance builder and a past SCCA National Champ. Good friend.
We'll use a dyno of his friend to do the final tunes on the Sprite and the GT together
as a class instruction for the guys. Mainly carb needles and timing. I think it's in Anderson.
I'll check.

I'll just bolt on the 7/8 tubular anti-sway bar.
Most stuff I prefer to do myself. Oil change to performance mods.
The 60....I just couldn't take doing that ps crap even ONE more time.

Interesting side bar:
Tad has an auto pit and old shop not 1000 yards from the driveway.
He mentioned we could have just done it there instead of going
to Pickens for the new shop.
Got me thinking. Access to a pit. Just saying.
Here's the panhard installed.
Check out all the black rubber on the polished ss muffler.
That stuff is a 1/16 of an inch thick. About a dozen hot laps
is all it took. I bet I tore off 1/3 the tires tread depth.
I needed this panhard to keep the rear more in check.

pace and reeves??? U live in pickens??

i'm in pickens. just north of ingles on fox sqirrel rdg area.

if you give out your address someone might try to steal your rig!

I was supposed to figure out an idler pulley that would fit in place of the smog pump on the land cruiser's 2F engine but i didn't have enough time to store my engine at the shop to do so.

Lawn mower pulleys would be much cheaper than anything SOR sells and usually run around 3200 constant RPMs so reliability will not be decreased.

If i ever get a chance to play around with one i'll find a cheap replacement for you SC and other non inspection area 60 owners.

I've got tons of V pulleys in stock to play with, i just need the time to figure out if i can get something to fit without fabbing up a special mount bracket.

I've also got kevlar belts that will hold up much better than Advanced/Autozone/Orileys belts at as much as half the price.

Yeah i am gonna need one of those belts here pretty soon.

my original Toyota belts lasted over 20 years, I would replace them with OEM

Problem is the smog pump is the belt adjuster. $OR used to sell one. $$$$
I checked to see if still available...nope.

If some industrious guy wanted to take a peek at my now unobtainium eliminator
it is available for viewing and knockoff.
Nice piece.

i'd put money on the kevlar belts intended for industural/commercial use lasting longer than OEM belts and they don't have the OEM mark up margins.

As soon as i get time and a rig is close to my shop and it has some down time i'm definately going to try to put together a kit of some sort.

ur welcome to come get mine. U can't do no worse than the p.o. did to it.

i'm out of work all week next week and i'm always looking for odd jobs for beer/cruiser money!
