Possible upgrades to 5-6-8 speed auto

I was just about to post a new thread but i remembered @Dragos80 you asked the question already about adapting the GM 6 speed to the 1fz-fe.

Any more thoughts on this? The savings on transmission power loss for the 6l80 vs the a343 have to be worth a half a supercharger. Plus pick up two more gears.
 
I randomly came across that site where they put a A750F into a diesel 80 series and went down the rabbit hole...and ended up here. I would imagine the 1FZ would feel like a different engine with a more efficient trans and an extra gear or two, considering those that have put a H151F behind it seem to say. I'd rather swap out a transmission than an engine and would like to keep the 80 automatic, just personal preferences. Sounds like the A750F is out due to bellhousing issues, but 6l80/90 would be viable. Cost seems to be within range of an engine swap or adding forced induction. Someone just needs to be the first, hmm.

Amen to that. I really think this is a good direction to go. GM is notorious for putting out some serious long term durability items even though they are generally geared toward "engineered obsolescence". The turbo 350, then the turbo 400 stand as some of the best autos ever produced IMO and the 4L60/80 and now the 6 speed versions (just make each gear shift into OD=genius) are no exception.

We all know, except @LS1FJ40 (jk buddy :flipoff2:), the 1fz-fe is a magnificent forever engine that is making way under its power potential (add turbo here). So a modern transmission would be a nice and long needed fit for an efficient way to get the power to the wheels IMO. The a343 is really awesome but not efficient. Taking advantage of what is produced in our current world would be a win-win in my book. I'd love a Toyota option myself, but unfortunately it doesn't look so good.

I did the whole LS1 thing with a 4L60e tranny in one of my 40s. To my knowledge it hadn't been done before when I did it back in 2003-2004. I called Advance Adapters, TLC4x4 and a few others. All said it was "cost prohibitive" and to do a TB350. I didn't listen. The power was neat. It sounded cool. It was no longer a Toyota though. Sold it. Don't regret selling it. I regret pulling a 53k mile 2F out of an Arizona barn find 40. It still haunts me to this day.

The 1FZ-FE is a great engine. But it's no 3FE. If I'm going around the world in an 80 I want a 3FE.

I'm a GM hater though. Never been a fan. Never been impressed.

Now, if we start talking about putting a 2JZ-GTE in an 80, I'm all ears!
 
I'm only talking about swapping a GM 6 speed in place of the 4 speed stock transmission vs trying to get the a750f 5 speed to work with the 1fz-fe. It might seem dumb to just swap the trans and not the whole LS driveline, but it is just a thought for those that might want to keep the toyota power.

Yes and no. Yes, adding 2 more cylinders would be nice. But that ups the complexity and duration of the swap significantly.

True, but as someone with more car projects than I should - time more of the essence than anything else, and most LS swaps blow way past their anticipated schedule. The physical trans swap can be done in a weekend, plus some tinkering with a shifter/wiring I'd hope it could be knocked out in a month.
 
Well, the whole 6 speed swap idea came to me driving from MI to CO last summer getting cooked out of my truck on I-80, mostly from transmission heat. My 80 is regeared and it sings pretty good at 75 or so. If I could drop revs on the highway, have a lower first gear, and pick up power to the wheels, thats a win-win-win.

I love how sweet those LS swaps look for sure, but I really want to see where the 1fz-fe can go.

Here's my pipe dream scenario from here:

1-Go to full stand alone ecu, possibly Wolf (controls transmission too).
2-Swap in a gm 6 speed auto
3- ditch the supercharger and go turbo for LS -like power.

It's not likely, but has not left the to do list either, and it can be done in steps to keep on the road and spread out the large $$ outlay.
 
So A750F is not viable due to the lack of adapters to our engines? Is that the main reason why it's a no go?
 
And stand alone trans management. There are a lot of controllers that are compatability but no set programs that are plug and play like the GM products.
 
Actually the guys in OZ at Wholesale Automatic Transmissions have that part sorted with a compushift:

"The A750 Transmission controller will work behind all engine regardless of configurations. In the case of the A750 we already have calibrations available for the 1HZ, 1HZ High Output, 1HD-T, 1HD-FT, 1HD-FTE and 1HD-FTE Hi Output. We can put a kit togeather to suit any engine but then you will have to do a calibration to suit your self."

Do we need to get stuck with Toyota?
Chrysler 545RFE, 65RFE? Mercedes 5G-tronic 722.6/W5A580 (as in Jeep)? GM?
 
I have done a tiny bit of research on the gm trans. Of course the gm trans to hf2a transfer case adapter is available. I picked up on a supra forum the idea of guys unbolting the a343 bellhousing, cutting off the gm bellhousing, and fitting the yota bell on. Don't remember how they handled input shaft variation. I have been thinking about a beefed up 6 speed swap so this would be good. No deep thoughts on computer control or cel's yet. I split thinking time between that and a 5 speed manual. It will be a while either way.
 
Yes, the bell housing on a343 is detachable, so that is not the big issue here. Having any other tranny match the bolt pattern would be one of the problems (custom made adapter needed), and TCU would be the other problem.
Overall length comes to mind too.
A 6L80 would be a dream (at least on the paper it looks really good... don't know anything about it's performance though)
 
ATI Auto has a 1FZ to chevy bell housing, that fits the TH400 and 4L80E. But good luck with the 6L80E electronics with the 1FZ and there is no adapter to the full time case. The Aussie guys at wholesale have done a 4L80 adapter as well.
 
Is there not a standalone tcu for the 6l80? Also, I thought the part time case would work with the Mark's adapter.
