Looking for information on where to find seals for Volvo C303 portals, and who has the wealth of knowledge so I don't make mistakes on this voyage.

I have a set of axles - the type taken out of military rigs and shipped to the US years ago. Still have the half of bolts that were cut off.

Plan is to put these under my 80 FOO.

Thanks for any help.

points I need help with....

Boots - where to get new ones

Disc conversion

where to get replacement seals

convert to air pressure vs. vacuum.

There's a massive thread on pirate devoted to these axles; where to buy oem parts, where to get after market items, and a slew of other discussions. You'll definitely want to spend your time searching there rather than here.

Yes there is a big thread, but I have been having issues raising anyone.

The threads there have become cold and old over at Pirate. I have emailed every vendor (which are all in europe) over past months with no responses.

I understood it would be difficult; however, I know there is someone out there that has the information I need, so I don't have to reinvent the wheel.

Just to set the bar here…. this will take some time. 6 months later, i still don't have any seals.

Huge progress today. Got an alert that bearings were on ebay. I ordered 2 of the 4 bearings that are on each corner. One of the bearings is the same on the landcruiser, so I am over halfway there on the bearings!

Drive gear (upper/small gear)

SKF/FAG 6210 (single row radial ball, open) - dims: 50x90x20 found on ebay.
INA BK4520 (drawn cup closed needle bearing) - dims: 45x52x20 found on ebay.

Driven gear (lower/large gear)

Timken JLM104948 (tapered roller/cone) same as LC
Timken JLM104910 (tapered race/cup) same as LC
Timken JLM508748 (tapered roller/cone)
Timken JLM508710 (tapered race/cup)

Need to find seals and boots.

seals:

CR 23451 (STEFA, BB - dims:60x85x8), upper portal/axle tube oil seal
CR 19687 (STEFA, BB - dims:50x90x10), inner hub grease/oil seal

STEFA, BY 80x92x28 (pn#32896 1) - outer hub grease seal --
*this is the impossible to find seal.

Did some quick searching, you are right, none of the major players appear to produce or even catalog that seal. It looks like you have 4 options.
1. Eventually find it on ebay or something.
2. Have SKF custom machine a seal for you. Probably big $$ but you get a proper seal.
3. Buy or make this adapter thing.
The House Of Flying Spanners :: Hub oil seals (STEFA)
3. Build your own seal like above but with an o-ring. It sounds silly but probably would work.

Concept. Download parker o-ring design manual and refer to the section on rotary seals. Section 5-27.

You could either run the oring on the volvo part or install a speedi sleeve P/N 99315 or whatever you design so you have a replaceable wear surface. Install this with the loctite retaining compound so it doesn't move and is sealed.

Then design a steel gland to hold the o-ring that you machine on a lathe. width 28mm or less. OD 92mm but sized for a proper fit. Probably a 2 thou clearance so you can use the loctite 638 or equal, retaining compound on it to lock it into place.

Design of your o-ring gland will be critical but if done right I bet it would last many hours. If you are willing to convert to portals, whats a few rings?

Wow. Thanks for all of these ideas. I agree with #3. I have a big lathe, so i would like try and make this adapter. I would love to see one of these adapters in person and take a few measurements.

Thanks @HoJo 61

I also got a PM from another MUDDER that is going to donate all the brackets off an 80 axle. Thanks @Tedward

@RMP&O may have some old info, he used to have portals on a patrol and was a stickler for good parts.

Can't help with the Volvo's.

I got some portals I would sell though, much less hassle than Volvo's since they use all domestic parts and they are about 10x stronger.

Cheers

Nope, Potral-Tek, the rights for these axles now owned by Torq Axle.

Cheers

are these the portalteks in the f/s thread? or a different set?

I have had them for sale a few times on here. They are just hard to work with in a full bodied truck. Leaf springs would make it easy but I am not doing leaves. What I am doing is dumping the full bodied truck and going the buggy route. This will make using the portals with coilovers a lot easier in terms of keeping the truck-buggy low.

Cheers
