Mine has about 250.000 and it did have a brake failure (at the drive way) according to the owner he fix it very simple about 2 years ago (very clever fellow)
Brakes failed on my '99 LC in the driveway on startup, 170k miles-- ABS and Brake dash lights on and alarm, pedal went all the way to the floor and no brakes. Code showed ABS controller and brake booster. Replaced the brake booster with accumulator as a unit, codes cleared and brakes now work.
Is this problem isolated to early 100's? And, are the braking systems identical on LX and LC?
My 99 LX has no brake issues and I recently replaced all parking brake parts. You guys scare me.
All years. LC & LX same. Generally it's the electric motor of the brake booster pump that quits first. There are other possibilities of failure, but most times it's the motor worn out, at 200 k miles or more.
Good to have a strong right foot, because there is a tiny bit of braking force left, just that you have to work for it. And a working parking brake is a must.
Main thing is to stop right away when the alarm goes off. Don't test the brakes a couple of times first; just stop, before the booster accumulator is empty.
It's good you found this thread and are aware of the issue. Great call replacing parking/emergency brake parts. Use it every once and while so you have a feel for it.
There doesn't seem to be any real root cause that you can prevent. As uhu stated it's commonly motor failure. Why, who knows. Just old and worn out. It does run multiple times every time you run the truck so makes sense.
I agree with uhu, don't wait and test the brakes, pull over and call a tow truck. I found this thread months after I got my truck and let it worry me until another 6 months passed and my motor failed (at 254k miles). Pulled right over and still had brakes at the very bottom of the pedal when I pulled into the grocery store spot. Thanks to this thread I reacted accordingly and no damage/injury.
The alarm is a constant high pitched tone. It's like no other alarm I've ever heard come from the truck. Red parking brake light comes on and abs light comes on. That's on a '99 LX. Never models may have more lights on the dash, but I'm not sure.
Once again, I find what I'm looking for on Mud. Thank you.
My wife has described very random, strange behavior out of our 190k 2001. I cannot get it to act up wihle I'm in it. Not complete brake failure, but rapid pedal pressure loss, and then return. ABS, VSC lights on. She has heard a metal on metal grinding noise 3 times now. Today the truck started rocking back and forth like front brakes locked solid, then engine died. Was able to restart, twice to get off the road. When I got there, truck ran perfectly normal. I would love to hear a sample of the warning alarm noise to confirm thats what she heard. Anyone know where I can hear it on demand?
I changed my vote to yes for 1999 with 333k. Lights and buzzer with brake pressure for a few miles. Taping on the brake booster motor got it to come back. I order a rebuilt motor which is currently in shipping now.

I had forgotten about this issue. Got to remind the wife again on what to do, as it's been a while.
Please note that if somebody posts and describes a failure, to be careful about using the words "no brake". To avoid confusion, that should best mean absolutely no slowing down capability. Else, say "limited brakes" -or better- something more quantitative. Thanks.
Oh, and vote if you have not already! Even if it's a No.
I had a ABS code 56 last week. I suspect it was just the booster pump since my pump was noisy, but since the code refers to High & Low Pressure switches, accumulator and booster pump, I went ahead and bought a complete master cylinder with rebuilt booster pump off EBay for $805 with a $300 core credit. A buddy helped me replace the assembly in about 2 hours.
I have not had total failure yet, but I just bought a 2006LX with just over 200k on it, wish I would of found this thread first. My brake pedal slowly falls to the floor while I am at a stop. Brakes normally in all other scenarios, but this has got me worried. No codes or buzzers.
The whole reason I sold my 80 to buy a 100 was to have a safer cruiser for my new baby. Between the new baby and my 2 jobs there is no way ill have the time to tackle a rebuild, it will be a Slee or dealer fix.
It would be interesting to note WHERE the various vehicles are from and see IF there is a pattern/propensity for vehicles from say 'rust belt' States to have a higher incidence of failure (or an earlier failure rate).
I know in more than a few cases the connection at the motor was severely rusted/corroded (read resistance).
Also, this is one of those things not directly related to 'mileage' but 'usage'. I live way out in the country and a typical trip into town would involve using the brakes maybe twice. A vehicle that spends its life in city traffic will get a real work out.
