Some of the group are kicking around South Dakota. There is the Badlands National Park and some National Forest, too. Seems to have some interest and semi middle of the country for everyone. What we're lacking is someone who knows some good trails, camping areas and leadership skills to ramrod this one.

You don't want to follow me, it doesn't end well.
I don't know. Somehow paper maps and Jeri's corrections got us to Jackson Hole in September. Not all who wander are lost. (Heard that somewhere.)

And J Mack's computer. :) When Jeri and I are out on our own reading maps and taking guesses, we do make wrong turns, but somehow always find our way and have a ball along the way.

You have no idea just how much backtracking Bonnie and I have done over the years...some of it even on trails! We're still known to "wander" on occasion.

Another thought, just to muddy the waters and provide an option if we wanted to go earlier in the year. How about the Gila NF in southwest New Mexico. Between Silver City and Reserve along the AZ border, if not this year maybe a future one? Looked into it from afar while planning the early December elk hunt we'd hoped to do with our son but had to cancel because Covid restrictions would have screwed him up at his job in Albuquerque. Looks like a lot of nice territory suitable either for expedition style or fixed base camping. Maybe NM folks could weigh in about this.

See sections 3 and 4 in the following description...or maybe the whole thing.
