Amazing, thank you! Good question... especially if the all thread is somehow secured to that plate. Usually I just borrow the tool from O'Reilly or Autozone along with a slide hammer.

The bearing isn't making noise, so it might not need replacing, but will have to see how it looks once I get it apart. On the 62, it's lubricated by gear oil and the race is just a hardened portion of the axle. On my 40 at least, it looks like the race is pressed on to the axle and is matched to the bearing. Did you have to replace the race on yours? I have a press, don't mind using it but would rather not if I don't have to.

No just the seals and bearing. I have some pictures of it here-

Now that I think about it that back piece to my tool may be cut on the sides so it’s not a full circle, then you can poke it in then turn it once you’re past the bearing. I’ll pull it when I get home and check.

I searched your thread, there was a photo of the rear axle on the press, you did a lot to your rig and it looks amazing! 😜 All good, I need to clean out that corner of the garage anyway!

Looks like I fished the backing plate from the other side when I had it all apart. But still you could shave off the sides of the plate so it could be fished through. Maybe I’ll make a little hole in it to tie a string so you can prop it back up against the seal then put the all thread in. Maybe there’s a tool that already exists for this though 😂
Anyway you’re still welcome to borrow it if it will work for you. Happy wrenching!

Finally had time to get after the rear axle seals and bearings today. Not a terrible job all in, it would have been way easier with Shane's @royal cake puller but I just ended up getting the rental one from O'Reilly and bashing them out. Had to smack the inner oil slinger thing back flat but that was no big deal.

This is the passenger side, driver's was about this bad. Been leaking for a while, but the seals weren't terrible. There were Koyos on there already, so they might have been replaced at some point.

Getting the old races off the axles was probably the most tedious part - lots of quality time with the grinder and earplugs. Careful to not go through too far and hit the axle - this did go through but I didn't hit metal on the axle. Once it's thin enough, the whole thing will crack and eventually come off with some pounding.

New race pressed on. I got to use my big ol' 16T press, very exciting! The driver's side took a little finagling with a bearing splitter and no arbors at first, so that the bottom had enough clearance to not hit the lower crossmember of the press. Once it was on there a little, placed the arbors and ramrodded it home.

I guess I could have done a better job of cleaning up the back of the axle. Ah well.

That's about it for now, hardest part of reassembly was putting the drums back on, but got it figured out.

Next up... well can't think of much. Maybe getting rid of that vacuum retard distributor?

Good job- I like the safety slippers!

In the winter, I just end up going out there with socks and flip flops. Which is both old man and not safe!

Reminder to do better...:)

That’s a 4speed U joint…and a 4 speed hole! On a 3speed cruiser? Hmmm.
Old pic from the 62 driveshaft debacle. Illustrating old man sandals only :)

Not a ton to report, but did get after a little bit of a rattle coming from the rear hatch. Short story time - back in late September on our last camping trip out to the Argus Range, I ended up not being able to open the rear hatch, mainly because the little lever that hits the pot metal latch had bent and was out of reach of the latch. Pulled the cover from inside the rig, opened the back and was able to come up with this bootyfab fix, which was on a tube of gray RTV:

IMG_1222.webp

This fixed the ability to open the rear hatch, and @65swb45 and I were able to adjust the little rods that pull the latches open, but there was still a bit of rattling coming from the rear. I readjusted the rods a bit and put back my old rear handle, which was actually just a chunk of 1/4" stock that was welded into a handle by the PO and jammed into the square socket. The lunch truck / RV handle works fine, but I kept smacking my head on it, as predicted. It's now in a box of spares on the bench. Probably better for a restoration than a working rig.

What else.. put the Bluetooth adapter back in the truck, and I really need to start looking for new springs and tires, but honestly it needs nothing to take out and enjoy. Except maybe new upholstery and padding. The old stuff is getting really trashed from all this good use!

Speaking of bootyfab fixes - while going through the photos of that trip, I remembered this little debacle. I had started from LA out the 14 early, well before sunup. Lots of drizzle bordering on rain coming out of LA, but once on the other side of the San Gabriels it was perfect weather. Stopped in Mojave for gas, and discovered that my gas cap was missing, at 8am on a Friday heading to offroad in the desert. I'd left it on my running board filling up back in town, and it skittered off into the street as I left. Not good.

Filled up and figured that my best shot at getting a replacement was in Ridgecrest, which I'd hit in about another hour or so. Cannonballed straight to a Napa, then an O'Reilly. No aftermarket caps would fit, but walking through the aisles I found these bearing cap things and came up with this, which worked amazing all weekend:

IMG_1223.webp

At one suggestion from another member of the crew, I poked a hole in the vinyl cap for the tank to vent, but cut a barrier out of a coffee lid as an insert to keep the gas from splashing out. Worked a treat and I ran this all weekend and most of the following week, until the gas melted the coffee lid to the gas inlet. Oops.

I even stopped at the Toyota dealer in Ridgecrest, knowing full well that the parts guy probably wouldn't have it, but decided to stop in for 2 minutes anyway to ask. Of course, it wasn't in stock, but he very nicely offered to order it for me. "It'll be here in about a week." Thanks dude, but I'm good.

One last photo of the Panamints. Can't wait to go back.

Nice work! That reminds me to go check my rear hatch hardware. I know I get a rattle from back there and that's a good candidate.
Although I haven't left my gas cap (yet), it has come close before. I leave it on my rear tire and one time pulling away I heard it fall off, thankfully. Sounds like a good spare to keep in my toolbox.

There is a small lip inside the filler neck...with a hole in it...for a reason...

I need to check and you'd know probably know better, but the P/N that came up for my '72 was just the flat cap without a chain. I'd prefer the style with the chain, if I could install it, because dumba$$.

In my head, I’m sure —9/71. But I’m pretty sure the PN did change in ‘72. As for whether it will fit, anyone who can rebuild a power steering pump can add a chain to a s gas cap.😉

Ooh, gas cap mod incoming! I'll have to think of some way to attach it to the rig.....

Tether it to the truck- what witchcraft is this?? We live in a wireless world now... hahaha.
Yeah, just Bluetooth it so it'll randomly be on your wife's car for no reason.
