I came across this performance chip that apparently increases some horses and gives a better mileage. Anyone has any experience with this or something similar. Thinking of giving it a shot.

Can you say snake oil?
Your money is better spent on a full tuneup, valve adjustment, and general baselining of a 35 year old vehicle.
When the 3FE was brand new from the factory, it produced 155 bone crushing horses. Sit back and enjoy the right lane.

A full tune-up with OEM parts, regearing (depending on your tire size), and a manual transmission swap is getting close to doing everything you can to squeeze power out of the 3FE. It will last forever, but it will never be a powerhouse.

The beauty of the 3FE is reliable, rugged and less chances of blowing your head, It will never pass anyone on the fast lane, but if you are worry about not able to do 80 up a steep grade, you are better off with a soccer mom SUV. Like the other said, full tune up, de-smog, timing advance, regearing, valve body upgrade, etc, etc.

I would say a hard pass on this one, they are genuinely a gimmick. The advertising says up to 35 hp and X mpg but doesn't guarantee a thing. Also you have to use the vampire clamps on the MAF which is a deal breaker if you ask me.

I would take some of the advice above and save the $100 dollars (sale price) for other things.

Exactly!

The only way that thing adds 35hp is if it comes with a turbo.

2nd best...
K&N filer + Tornado air intake + dyno-Tab fuel booster and a Pedal commander will add turbo-like power guaranteed 💯

In all seriousness there is no shortcuts in engine performance gains. Need to spend $ to get real HP.😎. We all choose wrong model of vehicles for expecting speed. But we are all curious, it even has a 4.5 stars rating......do it

Looking good. Almost made me jealous, but the 3-FE has been proven so far to be able to handle just about anything i throw at it....not gonna win any races, but not the point at all for these trucks. I am still a happy customer after all these years...

I’ve come to the conclusion that for a 3FE 80 Series, a V8 would be the best power upgrade. During the conversion, you got great access to do the steering box reinforcement upgrade on the frame with the engine out of it. The Cummins 6BT it’s not a bad choice except for the price of diesel is so damn high. Third choice would be the 1FZ, which is actually the best off-road choice, but it has a lot of baggage with it, IMHO. I say that, because I have a 1FZ and am used to staring at the “accurate“ temp gauge to avoid Head gasket damage. I love it off road though! But I tow an off-road trailer with it so the fantasy of a 6BT or a V-8 is always looming on the horizon… Lol

100% agreed on V8 or like a diesel swap. the 1FZ is great, but still under power and the sensitivity to engine coolant temp and its track records of blown HGs is giving it a bad rep. With that said, the 3FE is the most logical sense, on dirt, it is just as good. Save your money, go V8 or go home.

Looks like we have an overlap in the vehicle fleet - 97' F350 7.3 4x4 and 94' FZJ80.

As nice as the power from the Cummins would be in a cruiser one of my favorite things about the 1FZ is how quiet it is, especially in comparison to a 90's diesel engine.

You’ve got a good point there. Anybody that wants a power upgrade on an 80 series land cruiser, wants it for on road performance, not off-road performance. It’s that “stuck in the right lane” attitude.

Not sure what you mean by “overlap“. But I have to agree, the power stroke is definitely noisier… Lol. Luv it to death, though!
