I came across this performance chip that apparently increases some horses and gives a better mileage. Anyone has any experience with this or something similar. Thinking of giving it a shot.

Exactly!I would say a hard pass on this one, they are genuinely a gimmick. The advertising says up to 35 hp and X mpg but doesn't guarantee a thing. Also you have to use the vampire clamps on the MAF which is a deal breaker if you ask me.
I would take some of the advice above and save the $100 dollars (sale price) for other things.
what about 1FZ...what is the best upgrade to power that 4.5L with an appetite for Head Gaskets?

404hp at the crank...530ftlb to be precise.Exactly!
The only way that thing adds 35hp is if it comes with a turbo.
100% agreed on V8 or like a diesel swap. the 1FZ is great, but still under power and the sensitivity to engine coolant temp and its track records of blown HGs is giving it a bad rep. With that said, the 3FE is the most logical sense, on dirt, it is just as good. Save your money, go V8 or go home.I’ve come to the conclusion that for a 3FE 80 Series, a V8 would be the best power upgrade. During the conversion, you got great access to do the steering box reinforcement upgrade on the frame with the engine out of it. The Cummins 6BT it’s not a bad choice except for the price of diesel is so damn high. Third choice would be the 1FZ, which is actually the best off-road choice, but it has a lot of baggage with it, IMHO. I say that, because I have a 1FZ and am used to staring at the “accurate“ temp gauge to avoid Head gasket damage. I love it off road though! But I tow an off-road trailer with it so the fantasy of a 6BT or a V-8 is always looming on the horizon… Lol
Looks like we have an overlap in the vehicle fleet - 97' F350 7.3 4x4 and 94' FZJ80.I’ve come to the conclusion that for a 3FE 80 Series, a V8 would be the best power upgrade. You’ve got a good point there. Anybody that wants a power upgrade on an 80 series land cruiser, wants it for on road performance, not off-road performance. It’s that “stuck in the right lane” attitude.100% agreed on V8 or like a diesel swap. the 1FZ is great, but still under power and the sensitivity to engine coolant temp and its track records of blown HGs is giving it a bad rep. Not sure what you mean by “overlap“. But I have to agree, the power stroke is definitely noisier… Lol. Luv it to death, though!Looks like we have an overlap in the vehicle fleet - 97' F350 7.3 4x4 and 94' FZJ80.
As nice as the power from the Cummins would be in a cruiser one of my favorite things about the 1FZ is how quiet it is, especially in comparison to a 90's diesel engine.
