Hi everyone, i thought of asking this question here to get some generalideas as well as to help any new person who is going to buy a cruiser.

  • What are your thoughts on the availability of spare parts for the Fj40/BJ40 in the coming years. Think 5-10 years down the line?
  • Will an owner be able to maintain his/her cruiser?
  • Is it practical buying a cruiser now? (Help for a new member)
Feel free to add any other ideas.

Thank you.

Parts availability is going to suck more than now because parts availability sucks in most cases already... But not as bad as say a 1944 Toyota AK10 :meh:

  • Will an owner be able to maintain his/her cruiser?
Yes... Because most owners are resourceful and want to keep the cruiser going out of spite.

It was never practical... Even when they were new... It's the hobby that you can drive. However if you care for and maintain them they will not let you down.

Just bought mine in January, '77. I've been able to find pretty much everything I've needed OEM for my engine re-fresh. Sure it's pricier for OEM if that's the route you want to take, some of the items are few in the national toyota inventory. I would say buy the best one you can now, prices are only going to continue to rise. The latest edition of Hagerty magazine has the FJ40 as one of the 10 cars you should have purchased 5 years ago, 120% resale increase.

I cannot agree more with that statement. When I first got into these over twenty years ago you could find them in really good shape for about $4-$5k. You had to search since the internet wasn't available, but with the weekly auto publications they would pop up pretty regularly for decent money. Current market, $4-$5k doesn't get you much of an FJ40 at all.

Not sure what the #'s of FJ40's in todays market compared to say a Chevelle or Camaro are, but I'm guessing they are much lower. You pair that with collectability and the $$$ is only going to increase on these fine machines.

You also have to factor that the market for all vintage 4x4's such as 66-77 Broncos, Scouts , 69-72 Blazers/Jimmys as well as J@@P and Land Rover is fairly new to the auction world. My advice is if you have any of these rigs and can afford to keep them do so. It's better than putting money in the bank IMO.

Found that article.

I knew when I bought mine that it wasn't gonna be like finding parts for a J@@p, but I didn't want a J@@p I wanted a Toyota Land Cruiser! I really haven't had any issues locating parts, but I've mainly done brake wheel cylinders, clutch, master cylinder, thermostat, filters, etc. No, the parts stores don't ever carry anything in stock so I always have to wait a day or two, but that's no biggie. Rock Auto also has a wide selection. Yeah, the parts might cost a little more, but they are available. And just think, if the value is skyrocketing on these things, then surely the parts availability will become more readily available for people to fix them up...
