I thought I read somewhere that the SOR grommets were rubber.?
They are just a non descript rubber plug. I too wish these were reproduced. I just pulled mine out that were in a protective wrap but they just fell apart.

I agree. I want a faithful reproduction.

Exactly why perhaps the repros are a different material ? If they used the same material, they would fall apart as yours did. If you are doing a museum resto then I agree using the original material as it does last long enough for the next person.

Newer materials advances would help (I say cautiously). I had removed mine from the doors to re-weatherstrip. One has to remember they were 51 years old and UV exposed the bulk of their life to which they met their fate.
On the similar note, I've had aftermarket new rubber parts deteriorate in less than a year as a result I ended up back with OEM.

I suppose it becomes subjective as to repro material. I have experience as well with materials. Sometimes we are subject to people reproducing as NEW OEM suppliers are long gone.

It made me happy just to see a new one out of the bag. Amazing!
Mine are fine in that they are still pliable but one has yellowed and I cannot correct the colour. +1 for a repro

During a routine carb rebuild I came up short on an idle up link. Went into the NOS vault for this little gem.

Found a baggie with a couple of NOS 70-74 sight glasses next to it. :grinpimp:

BTW, if anybody has some extras of these links laying around, I could use a few more.

Look what popped up on eBay today. I snagged it up as soon as I could -

Not every day that an apparently good condition early trouble light socket cover comes on the market.
That IS a seldom seen part indeed. I have a few of them, but I’m afraid to actually put them on my truck.

A prime candidate for a 3D repop.😉

If anyone would like to sell me a light socket plug cover that is in good condition, I will provide it to my son for him to measure and create 3d print files.

I now only have 2 of these and seems today's seems to be the nice one, so I'll run the other one.

I have a few clients who have some of the fanciest 3D scanners and printers so could likely get it done in any spec/volume needed, but since I'm in Africa, logistics would play a role. Labor costs would be dramatically cheaper though compared to US made ones.

But then the question aroses, will making a ton of these take away from the excitement of finding one?

No. The truth is that the sockets themselves are so brittle at this point that having covers only tempts fate of breaking the socket itself.☹️

@ToyotaMatt sent me one of his super😎 led inspection lights, but I’m afraid to try it unless and until I NEED to, because I’ve seen too many of the old brown sockets crumble just by looking at them sideways.😱

Found this really well preserved decal on the underside of my '64's seemingly untouched regulator when cleaning up its contacts to improve charging -

Astonishing how well the internals were preserved given that its motor was rusted stuck from standing for decades in a humid climate -

Clamp meter shows 15A of charge post startup since cleaning the contacts, up from about 6A.

Light gray TPU might work... Can someone supply approximate dimensions of actual?
I have a client who commercially does rapid prototypes and production of low and high volume unique stuff, including armament spec stuff. After showing him a cover, confirmed he has multi dimensional scanners, software to clean all up, the capacity to print thousands per month, the local cost will be minimal if we do volumes and we can chose whatever material we want in terms of finish, durability, etc. Must just find time to visit his place three blocks away to get it done

@locklaw does your ‘64 have a generator and an idiot CHG light? If so, that regulator is a fair bit o’ hens teeth there.

Prototyping boss, prototyping. This is just PLA, for proof of concept. It's a rough draft... lol

Once my TPU finishes dehydrating, I'll see about printing one in the flexible stuff and work on getting it smooth, without the print lines.
