I am struggling to find the correct paint code for my 1971 fj55. I know I have splits on it but It is in fact a north american fj55. I know its not a custom color because I have seen a few fj55s of mines vintage in this color. Colors I know Its Not from testing - Coronado beige t451 and its not Pueblo Brown.

If any of you know this color please share it would save me some time getting this paint matched.

yeah I have seen all the paint charts. I think I am going to try t-1455 Appenino brown. It its kinda my last try before just get some paint mixed. without actually seeing a paint sample it actually looks close.

How do you know it's not Pueblo Brown?

I bought a sample of that color and the other one listed above. its 100% confirmed not that color
Yes but I guess I wasn't clear enough with my question. What I should have asked is how do you know the sample you bought is exactly like the factory Pueblo Brown in 1971? Those color charts for the FJ55 have been pretty accurate and the only brown and white FJ55 available in 1971 was Pueblo Brown. It certainly could have been repainted at some point so I would be looking for signs of that as well. Also keep in mind, if it's the original paint then it's going on 55 years since it came out of the factory. I bought some premixed aerosol Freeborn Red to touch up some places on my 1977 FJ55 and it really didn't come close to the paint that was on the pig. That was after buffing out the surrounding areas also. So I'm not sure you would ever get close enough to match that paint going off a paint code.

Regardless, if you are trying to blend in some patch panels then I think the only way you will get close is to get a part scanned and custom mixed.

I am aware of all that and you are probably right. I know of another fj55 in the same color and his was difficult to figre out the color too.

I went through this on my spring green fj40. some t1028 spring green was not the same as others but at least they were close and had good success blending of course it was not perfect. That was more of a patina build though so I didn't need to match as well. Pueblo brown was Not close at all. it was very very dark in comparison and it was a different brown a little more burnt umber in color where the brown I have is a little more burnt sienna. Even in the non repainted no faded areas I found its 100% not the right brown. It was repainted at some point. but under the fuel door was not. and in some areas I found it was not. I bought a spray can of brown I mentioned above t1455. if its not close to that I am going to have it color matched like you said. Now I will say my sample of pueblo brown could have been garbage too. so even if I get it color matched I may try another thing of pueblo brown. I really just want to know the color is.

My input includes trying to solve this on my 1963 FJ45 that I'm pretty sure is Yosmite Yellow. Painted it with a bad match in the early 80's before the internet and color matching computers and rust came back with a vengence (I was young with a baby on the way so no time). Started a similar quest for the "correct" match formula.

I have a perfect un-faded sample on the gas tank straps, and it appears off from every "image" Ive seen on Mud, and in another thread or two others struggled getting a match to this or any light yellow early Toyota. I have concluded I will just spend what it takes to get a perfect match to that gas tank straps (in whatever material I choose as that also effects it somewhat)... and proudly anounce it is THE "OEM Toyota Yosemite Yellow"

My father was a paint chemist (Valspar and Testers way back), I beleive any published vintage formula is far more likley NOT to match ones paint (or the tiny chip) because of changes in product and how they're mixed. In addition... I mean if those fine Japanese workers were OK reaching over for a say 65' engine to drop in someones 66' model etc...(this was a thing back then); I'm pretty sure they were not worried the "Brown needs slightly more cyan to be the exact color on the dealers brocure". Hense your purchased sample doesn't match (in that case either or both your paint OR the purchased touch up is off slightly from the theoretically perfect paint code (two seperate but related likley problems).

If you have an untainted sample I would just match it and call it a win. Another good and valid theory you read is paint it the available touch up code if you want to be able to touch up and repair with rattle cans.

Does your VIN plate have the color code? Mine is on the plate in the engine bay, along with the engine, axle, and diff codes.
I have not seen the vin plate under the hood. the one on the door pillar does not have a paint code. Ill check and root around there when I get home at the end of the week. that would be amazing if it had the color code there.

It won't be on the door pillar plate. My engine bay VIN plate is (more accurately "was" at the moment) on the passenger firewall near the front.
