P0335…to a bent valve (update...and it's not good…but it’s getting better...She's ALIVE!)

How many of them had cam tower reseals prior? I have only seen broken springs once at the dealer, and the cam towers had been resealed and the follower not installed correctly. I'm not saying this is the only cause, but it does make me wonder
Speaking of the 3UR specifically? There were recalls for faulty valve springs in a number of Toyota models I thought. But not our engines..

Can the valve springs be replaced without removing the head?

Thinking preventative maintenance, here....

I believe so but it involves removing the spark plug and pressurizing the cylinder so the valve doesn't drop.

I've also read about feeding a fair amount of nylon cordage into the spark plug hole then rotating the crank so the piston pushes it up against the valves. This seems less precarious to me than making sure the air pressure is maintained to hold up the valves. I've done the air pressure dance before on another car and ultimately it worked but it didn't inspire confidence. That led me to seriously consider the cordage option if I were ever to do it again.

I know of someone in AZ that was quoted 32k plus labor for a new motor at Toyota. (2016 LC)

Overland Cruisers performed another borescope. Heavy scoring on walls of cylinder 7. Coolant also observed on cylinder 7 piston. Further investigation in cylinder 8 confirmed a dropped valve and that number 8 piston is cracked with a valve stuck in the piston. This was the news I was dreading. I'll attach some pictures. Needless to say I'm gutted. They'll begin exploring options. I'll have some decisions to make ie does it make sense to even do anything else at this point. In my mind, here are my options...

1 - we source a wrecked but running 5.7 out of a Tundra, Sequoia, or LX. Confirm it's viable, has compression etc. Use the long block and move my LC bits over
2 - source a new short block and new heads. Move my LC bits over
3 - sell her as-is...non-running with a blown motor. Is $10k-$15k for a super clean non-running 200-Series even realistic?

I don't even know what to think. I'll give Stephen time to look at his sources for option 1 and go from there.

Damn dude, that’s rough news. I hope something workable presents itself soon…

Bummer. It sounds like you have a good shop there willing to do the work, so I'd quote #1 and #2 if they are willing, and make your choice there. I think you'll get buyers at $10-15k for a complete truck with a blown motor, but if you're going to look for another 200 you might come out ahead spending $10-15k on yours and keeping it going.

Jesus. This is nightmare s*** considering we knowingly overpay for these trucks for their reliability. Sorry you are having to deal with this.

Different thread where a truck was totalled when a wheel came off. Truck went to auction but will probably net 25k+.

So yes I think you could get 15-20k with a blown motor if you ship it to car-part or whoever. @kcjaz might have some ideas for you there as he auctioned his wrecked rig (different thread) which had a good motor but not much else.

Personally I’d fix but my truck has a lot of other mods so it’s not easy to sell and buy another truck in otherwise similar condition. For a bone stock truck, see what else is out there and do the math. I will say though if I was putting a used motor in I’d be very tempted to do a lot of PM beforehand - new gaskets, timing chain cover, timing chain tensioner, valley plate, etc as that stuff is much easier and cheaper to do when the engine is out. But you also run the risk of doing it then finding an issue with the used motor and eating that PM cost

Right? QDR until something like this happens. Which isn't common. I've had all kinds of makes and models where something like this wouldn't have surprised me. But for my 200 Series to just grenade itself...yes it's nightmarish. QDR is exactly why I bought one, like most of us here.

I hate to say it but I might just cut my losses and move on. Move into a 2016+ unit. Take what I get for a non-running 200 plus the $15-$20k I would put into it to get it running and get a newer one. But damn, I love my Pacific Blue Metallic...I'm so torn. I'll sleep on it and do some more math once I get my few options quoted.

Heading down to Hurricane, UT for a mountain bike race on Saturday. It's a looooong race so I will have a lot of time alone in my head this weekend to contemplate this situation.

Yes, we're in alignment here. I'd address all of that and do a ton of PM at the same time. But that will just continue to drive costs up and up. At some point it just makes more financial sense to move on. If I had a built truck like yours, I think it's a different conversation, like you said. Thanks man.

It hurts just to look at those photos.

I know of one thread on here with someone having trouble with a used engine (maybe even twice), so there is some risk to used. Why don’t you check on value of yours as it sits and then decide.

I hate to see one die like this. I have an urge to get out my torque wrenches and hook up an engine hoist…………

But damn, I love my Pacific Blue Metallic...I'm so torn.

They are pretty rare but the 16+ blue onyx pearl looks amazing in sunlight.
