After a few rounds. Honestly I think sending this to the blaster guy to soda or plastic bead blast is a better idea. The cost of all the supplies and the time involved in this cleaning don't make it worth the while. In hind sight I should of had it media blasted

Alright opinions please. I am headed out to clean up the transmission and transfer case. I will be painting the transmission a semigloss black, but I am undecided about the transfer case. Do I paint it or just try and get it really shinny and new looking? Pro's and Con's? Any one have a recommendation for where to buy a Transfer case saver?

I painted mine Duplicolor Aluminum Silver (as seen in my thread).

Dan I think powdercoated his clear but mine was pretty nasty anyway.

All clean! One problem, the aluminum on the transfer case look all oxidized. Does anyone know how to make it shiny again? Baking soda and water? I can't tell if it's from the oven cleaner and engine degreaser or if it is from hard water? Bummed about it. Hope I can figure out how to make it shine again.

Side cover removed. It looked really clean up in there. The gears looked really good to me. I think there might have been some work done on this case before. The staked nut looked really new and the bearing looks brand new ! Non OEM gasket sealant. All signs that this cases has been serviced. Bonus !

Tranny installed and then painted with a coat of chassis black. The light rust will be perfect for the curing of the chassis paint. Here is the big question. Will I be able to put the transfer case on while the tranny is installed? I measured and I have like 1/4 inch of room at best to get it on . I have my doubts though. If not then off it comes. No biggie I guess, but then I will need another person to help me do it. Hoping to get my transfer case saver ordered tomorrow. I ordered up a new nose boot and fork boot. Now off to work for a few days.

Hey 24hrs I just read your sig line. You had an HJ45 and a Troopy and you sold both? How do you sleep at night?

Ambien. :D

I thought the Troopy would be a good substitute for the HJ45. Oddly enough, it felt totally different. I really regret selling the pick up and I'm looking for its replacement daily.

Oh yeah, congrats on the dream job.

Broth, I would not use oven cleaner on aluminum. I'm not sure if you have done this before but it has a known chemical reaction emitting gases and oxidizes and even eats up the aluminum. I remember this from science class in 5th grade.

Take aluminum foil, spray it with oven cleaner and fold it up. It will literally get so hot it can catch on fire and gases begin pouring out, pits and eats up the aluminum. Notice that no part of an oven ever has aluminum in it.

Just figured I'd give you a heads up.

Thanks cliff for the heads up, but unfortunately I had already done it. Good news is there was no pitting , but it did oxidize the hell out if it. I have spent the last 2 days with a wire brush and aluminum polish getting it clean. Luckily I didn't leave the cleaner on for very long so the damage was minimal . Just a PITA to make it shiny again.

Nice.

In this picture, what is the boot called on the bellhousing and what is its purpose? Mine is all deformed and won't go back in, but I'm not sure why it's even there:
