Once again..debate on the right oil for 1HD-T and other old Toyota diesel engines.

Yeah...like I've stated before, in the recent oil change that I just did in my 12H-T, I was surprised at how thick 15W40 Rotella dino oil looked when it came out of my crankcase...and the ambient temperature wasn't even that cold!

I'm happy with the 0W40 Rotella synthetic that I've had in there for a couple of months now...not really any consumption, don't see much difference in the oil pressure gauge, and flows really quickly at starting. Unless it gets really hot this summer, I'm thinking I might just keep synthetic in my engine all year.

That doesnt explain why 1HZ rarely suffers from bad BEB .Ive always beleved the 1HD T had more bad bearings because of the extra HP and the fact that people like to tow with them.

True and agreed, but I'm still careful and that was one of the reasons I selected ACL instead of Toyota ones when I did the BEBs; I could visualize the aluminum powder flaking off the bearing while the tin ones would remain pliable...

I did save that file but I fear its on the hard drive that went bad

Hmmm... Whaddya know... Mine didn't (which is remarkable after 10 years of daily use, but it was one of the first drives using silent "air" bearings)... But I have no idea what the file name was and looking for it among more than 600,000 files is going to take time, which I don't have right now. Which reminds me I have to find a specific name in a file on that drive in the hope of finding a phone number, don't know if it's on the drive or one of the 200 CD and DVD backups I've made along the years.... Can you imagine searching one terabyte of files dispersed among a hard drive and 200 disks for a specific string of characters?

20-50 is the recommended diesel oil in oz. Thats what Toyota Australia bottle up and sell at the dealer.

Interesting info Rosco .. guess you have close to the same outside temps that we have here .. I'm looking for swap my oil to something like 10-40 or 10-50 ..

Yes ,similar temps. I went for a 400klm drive up the new uncompleted coastal highway(you need a landcruiser to get through the middle section) and the temps hit 42c.
Oil is like water on a day like this and your face gets burnt looking in the engine bay.

After about 10 minutes of idling, I got impatient. Didn't want to keep the garage door open too long.

It might say the same thing in my truck but it's pouring rain and I just got back from getting a shot in my throat at a clinic and don't feel like going back out again!

Idling takes a very long time to warm up an old Toyota diesel. In cold weather it might never get to operating temperature. In warm weather I let it run at 1800rpm for about 10 minutes while I get the tools out, etc. In cooler weather I take it for a drive first.

Thanks MOT! When you go check it out I'd be curious to find out more about it (what it says).
I changed my 15w/40 rotella and it still looked clean last time i did a change.

Another random and totally non-scientific observation: Since changing to 10w30 Delo 400 (from 15w40 Rotella) it seems that the oil is way cleaner after a couple thousand km. Checked it today and it was not nearly as black as I was expecting. Also could be related to lots of hwy driving and not much around town or pulling hard. I'm not sure which is the bigger factor, I'll just have to keep an eye on it over the next couple changes...

Yeah...I realize that. It would have eventually gotten warm enough, or I should have just gone for a short drive...bottom line was I was too lazy that day. Normally I change it when the engine is warm.

I always thought Toyota recommended 10W-40W or 15W-40W for these engines. At least in Europe.

Japan, Europe and Australia recommend different oils, its kinda funny if you ask me.
I am curious to see how running 10w/30 and 5w/30 will be comparing to 15w/40 Rotella

Is there any indication what region the label came from or was meant for that you translated. I´m here in Centroamerica and I´m running Motul 15w-40. That is the standard weight oil for any diesel around here. Approx 6 months in the 1HZ and before that about a year and change in the original B. Altogether two years so far, so good.
