Once again..debate on the right oil for 1HD-T and other old Toyota diesel engines.

Mot,
Is there any indication what region the label came from or was meant for that you translated. I´m here in Centroamerica and I´m running Motul 15w-40. That is the standard weight oil for any diesel around here. Approx 6 months in the 1HZ and before that about a year and change in the original B. Altogether two years so far, so good.
Cheers,
John

the labels japanese off of our JDM landcruisers with the 1hz, 10z and 1hd-t engine.
My dad thought it was cool that they run off 10w/30 just like all the generators that the canadian coastguard runs.
I am curious to see how it works in the future.

That decal is the same as in my JDM rig, meaning it was intended for Japan (which has a similar climate to me in BC). Foreal's truck is from Japan too...

Edit... Just read Foreal's reply. What he said!

I have mine its its piss bottle just got it get tested, also have a Delo 5w40 to test out..... Results shortly

I probably posted this way back at the beginning of this thread; but WTH, I'll post if again. Old Japanese diesels all call for a JASO DH-1 certification. Yes, it is an old oil certification and yes newer oils likely have better detergents, etc. However, they do lack the high concentration of calcium which apparently is a lube additive that our engines require. I remember a thread on one of the Aussie forums where they found considerable cam and rocker wear with engines using oils without the JASO DH-1(2) certification. Here are some oils which have it: Delo 400, Rotella T, & Castrol Tection HD.

Interesting thread. Seems this has been a debate for a wail.

Being new to the H engine (~year) I'm still trying out oils. I've ran Delo 400, and noticed lower oil pressers at high temps. I currently run Rotela 15w40 (for convenience sake, all my other diesels like it) and it seems to hold oil PSI fine. My geology professor in college worked in the oil fields and swears there's no difference between oil brands..."They all come out of the same pipe."

With the cold temps below 0F the H has a hard time starting. A lower radiator hose heater has made it a lot happier. I think I can see it smiling, but it still has some trouble. Would a synthetic oil be better in cold temps or the mobile 5w50? Where do you find 10w30 for diesels? Rotela and Delo are all the shop here has.

I have this theory that what they call grades of oil in Japan is different then here any way. All the Japanese PS pumps I've seen list ATF instead of power steering fluid. So they obliviously call ATF PS fluid in japan right?

Chevron sells Delo 400 10w30 Dino oil, this is the stuff I am using right now.

For warm temps, I like the Castrol Tection. For colder weather, the Delo 400 or the Rotella T. Your geology professor is not a lube chemist. What comes out of the ground is very different from what comes out of the bottle.

Many older Japanese vehicles used both ATF (Japanese Dextron III) also for power steering hydraulics. IMO, that was a great idea. You should be aware that the Japanese Dextron III is not the same as the Dextron III used in North American built vehicles. You should always put an ATF in the transmission which meets the specific OEM specs. In my case with a Nissan Transmission, it is Japanese Dextron III which is marketed in North America as Nissanmatic D ATF. North America Dextron is known to dissolve the old paper clutch packs in the older Japanese transmissions.

I am curious if anybody is using or has opinions on using the Mobile 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40?? http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_Turbo_Diesel_Truck_5W-40.aspx I am considering switching to synthetic oil in my BJ74 because of canadian winters and I see they are selling this at Wallmart.
At 48$ for 4.4 L.... I thought buying chevron Delo was expensive! Doesn't even look like the Mobil has the JASO Spec that the Chevron Has.
