‘96 Lexus LX450, running the Wits End turbo kit.

I’m seeing water temp & oil temp readings from my JRP (Just Race Parts) gauge.

Water temps usually see is 5-6 degree hotter reading from the ODBII gauge (Scan Guage II) display. But the JRP water temp sensor is reading temps comming from just out of the head, so I assume that’s the degree difference?

My JRP oil temps are consistently reading about 10-12 degree difference between water & oil temps.

For example, yesterday, water temps were reading, from JRP guage): water, 186, oil temp was 202 temp.

So my question is, how hot is too hot for oil temps in general or for the 1FZ?

Sounds like your engine is operating as designed (oil a bit hotter than coolant). Just keep the cooling system in good working order, use a top tier oil and filter, and the engine will be happy.

Hey I just replied on the turbo forum-cruisers and Co.

You said your oil temp is at 250deg:
What's your milege on your LX?
What oil and filter brand you using?
Original HG?
How often change oil?
Does it burn oil that you know off?
(You will know when you change oil.)

230-260deg is consider normal but if you're concern I would go back to basics.
Use OEM oil filter
Use synthetic oil

If HG is original you may be burning oil causing lower oil than normal, hence the high oil temp.

Other than that-just enjoy your Turbo. If engine breaks, just rebuild😉

I was out in Death Valley a few weekends ago.
Oil got up to 248 degrees. Water temps at 210-212 degrees driving through a soft sand wash for over 20 minutes. Outside temps were mid 70s. (Winter).

Milage is 254,xxx.

HG replaced at about 230,xxx with Cometic gasket. Then installed turbo at that time. About 2019.

Oil is OEM spec 5w30 synthetic type. Not sure brand, but from local Econolube. Not sure of filter brand, from an Econolube also.

Oil changes are not every 3,000/3 months.
Historically, I’ve only put about 3,400 miles a year on the rig for the past 15 years. It’s not my daily driver. So like once a year changes.

Doesn’t burn any oil. Still topped off at every change.

Sorry to say but something is not right with your 80.
Also you change your oil once a year and driven only >4k miles/yr is 😬
Your 80 needs to be driven especially with a turbo you need to change oil at a minimum 2x/yr.
Folks on MUD that has turbo only complained about coolant temp.

I would do an engine flush(oil) not at econolube but an actual mechanic shop. I don't trust those drive through oil changes.
There's topics on MUD of what filters our 80s don't like so maybe it's as simple as a wrong filter that econolube is using.

Also 210 in winter is concerning. I don't have a turbo so not apple to Apple but during hot summer with temp ambient of 110 my coolant temp was 210 with AC on going up the steep incline to Cerro Gordo in death valley. Our buddy with a jeep over heated when we reached the top at the mines.

I have a feeling the transmission temp was pretty hot plowing through the soft sand.

I should have put it into 4low 2nd start.

Just a theory, but hot trans, goes thru radiator, increases water temps. Top off with high oil temps, heat soak & everything just keeps getting hotter.

Could be wrong though…

As for oil changes, I’d say I average it about 8-9 months. Usually right before or after a long camping trip.

300F and under you are fine.

You'll be fine. Occasionally hitting 248F won't kill the oil or your engine.

For that same reason why I installed an Aux tranny cooler fan. May not need it but it's for my peace of mind. And now getting my turbo installed hopefully my tranny will finally benefit from it.
