Good info but be careful on those frequencies. Rugged Radios has been issued a citation by the FCC for selling some of those radios. The way I understand it they have a business license on some/all of those frequencies but there are other issues. Those licenses are mostly regional not nationwide and have many other legitimate businesses who paid for their spot you might be interfering with. Ham license doesn't cover these frequencies.
It's not 100% technically legal but the best way I know of to not cause trouble is take that Beofeng and program in FRS maybe GMRS or MURS frequencies and have fun. There seems to be some growth in the number of people using GMRS for trails.
