Full disclosure - I added the snorkel to my truck strictly for aesthetics. Maybe I’m a fraud, but I think it makes the truck look more utilitarian.

I know this thread is a few years old..

Great tech thread and TIA! I picked up an OEM raised air intake for my 77 and confirmed with the seller at the time (a land cruiser parts vendor) and was told it would fit my truck. Reading through this thread now it looks like they sold me a wide nose unit and not the narrow nose one I need.

Can I make a wide nose unit fit the 77?
Parts I have:
1 x Precleaner 17730-66010
1 x Snorkel duct 53299-60190

1 x Snorkel duct "Land Cruiser" 53285-60090
2 x Brackets for the top portion: 53772-60030 & 53773-60010

Is there an aftermarket unit that would work with the factory air cleaner hosing for the factory raised air intake (I also purchased this)?

Since I already have money invested, looking to see if I can work with what I have or if I should look at other options before I start cutting and putting holes in my fender.

Cheers

I put a later model snorkel on my narrow nose troopy.

@bj70bc said, in post #51 in another snorkel thread, that a wide nose snorkel can be worked into a narrow nose. I swear I've seen someone here do it... but checked a few threads of folks I thought did it and can't find the person.

Thank you so much for sharing, this gives me hope. Looks like I need a few more pieces. What size rivnuts did you use?

yes later model snorkel will work on a narrow nose 70, this is what is on mine

Whatever the stock bolts are, M8x1.25 maybe? I bought an assortment of them on Amazon and borrowed a rivnut gun from a friend.

Did I miss the air cleaner assembly housing part number for the factory raised air intake or do you have to modify your old one?

I modified my old one. It might be difficult to source a factory version.

Thanks for confirming. Do you have any picture you can share?

heres one....
as you can see the snorkel sits flush with the hood (looks better), flows with the body line properly, is a bigger volume internally and the bolting holes are much more aesthetic than the 'proper' oem one,
Yes, modify the air box with a bigger inlet, easy to do, and block all the other old holes, also silicone all the connections and joints so it will do its job properly, and if you are after better efficiency cut out half of the fins so it flows a bit better ( a safari top flows the best tho)
the narrow nose 70 series oem snorkel should be discontinued and this version should be the permanent replacement, it is superior and fits perfect

Thanks for the write up. I couldn't help but be reminded of this though:D

Admitting it is the first step..... 😄
mine has saved my engine from water but mostly is on dust reduction duty

Does Toyota even refer to their factory offering as a snorkel or do they call it a raised air intake?

Depends on the year/model. In the US it was a 'Desert Air Intake'. In other markets it was certainly a snorkel or schnorkel as @Honger pointed out. Always makes me giggle :D
