Subject: LC America Effort Status -- July 4th, 2018

All –

I expect that many of you that are close to my age have seen the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. So from that movie, I have to say, we’re not dead yet! Actually, LC America is far from it. Since the start of this effort, we have focused on several things:

  • Bringing the LC79 diesel engine into EPA compliance
  • Getting the LC79 truck itself to be DOT/NHTSA certified
  • Building an LC79 more capable than the one that leaves the factory
  • Being 100 percent transparent throughout the process.

We had an extremely successful Overland Expo West in mid-May, we have been approved for another year of testing that runs through June of 2019 and we have received more positive feedback on the LC America effort than we ever could have imagined / expected. Having our LC America team meet and greet folks at OE West was an eye opening experience. While I have been confident that there was significant interest in the LC79 here in the US, this was the first time that most of my team got to see the outpouring of interest and offers of support first hand. The experience was nothing short of invigorating.

  • We didn’t promise anything
  • We didn’t take any money
  • We didn’t spread falsehoods
  • We spoke the truth at every turn.

As I have stated many times, there are many others out there that are far more knowledgeable on these vehicles than I am. So while LC America believes it has the means to bring these vehicles into US specifications, we have collaborated with many of the top Landcruiser / diesel experts worldwide for guidance on our builds, to include:

My point would be, here are several of the biggest names in the Landcruiser aftermarket parts business that are working with us to make LC America a reality. They share our excitement about this effort. My wife and I have met with all of these folks in person, have broken bread with them in many cases and have developed a strong personal relationship with them built on trust. I told everyone that stopped by our booth that the process was slow, we had made progress, that we would continue to work through the EPA and DOT/NHTSA approval matrix, and that we hoped to be able to offer these vehicles to customers in the US by the end of the year. Simple as that – and nothing has changed. Much to my chagrin, so many folks have reached out via our website and on the phone, that I must sincerely apologize for not getting back to each and every one of you sooner. We haven’t gone silent – as some would suggest – we’ve just been focusing on our full-time jobs and recharging our batteries a bit.

Of course we are still bombarded / trolled by a very small minority of the so-called Toyota experts out there – like Steve Jackson from Land Cruisers Direct and his uninformed lackeys – that continue to spread falsehoods about LC America. So let me clarify. While Mr. Michael Papp was the brainchild behind the original idea for LC America, he has not been associated with our company since LC America was officially established OOA April 18th of 2017. To put a firmer point on it, Mr. Michael Papp is not an LC America shareholder and has contributed no time, energy or resources – financial or otherwise – to the LC America effort. There are just two LC America shareholders – my wife, Susan K. Kennedy and myself. If you speak with folks that my wife and I and our team have engaged with over the past several years, you will find that our words and our deeds fully uphold the finest tradition and character of the TLCA membership. All that we – LC America – can and will do, is continue to conduct our business in an entirely professional manner. There is no doubt that our ability to prosper has been significantly handicapped by Mr. Michael Papp’s independent actions. So to address the slanderous attacks of Mr. Jackson and his few ill-informed hangers-on, let me state again here for the last time:

  • DISCLAIMER: While Michael J. Papp is the brainchild behind the technological know-how necessary to legalize new Toyota 70 Series vehicles here in the U.S., Michael J. Papp is in NO way associated with LC America or any of LC America’s current efforts. Moreover, LC America does not accept any responsibility for any of the actions – past, present or future – taken by Michael J. Papp.

So where do we go from here. We have updated our system of systems based on the test results / feedback that we have received. We have some hard decisions to make regarding our current test vehicle a 2017 LC79 – and the most direct / prudent course to receiving final approval. We are working to expand upon the slate of optional equipment that we will be able to offer to include:

  • Automatic tire inflation system
  • Portal axles
  • Extended range auxiliary fuel tank
  • Satellite phone
  • Recaro seats
  • Etc.

So as I have said before to all that will listen – stick with us!

John

I wonder if any of these companies are aware that LC America is using their names to try and gain credibility?

Why don't they mention they were recently booted from TLCA?

The funnies part, "We spoke the truth at every turn." Oh man, I had to pick myself up off the floor after laughing so hard.

Interesting that he specifically called out Steve using language that could open himself to a successful lawsuit ....

A couple of things from his comments:

- “collaborated” is a very broad term. If I call XYZ company and say “I’d like to buy a bumper for my 80 Series, what do you recommend?” That could be construed as “collaboration”.

- I’m a bleeding heart, hippie, liberal, feminist BUT his wife didn’t take his last name. Why?

- So now its a 2017 model instead of a 2016?

- Too busy to respond to emails or phone calls BEFORE they have your money? I’m in sales, when people want to buy, I answer my phone. I’m never too busy to accept money.

- The old saying “if you’re explaining, you’re losing”

- it bugs the s*** out of me that they call it a “LC79”. It’s like calling a Land Cruiser a “FJ”.

- The old saying “if you’re explaining, you’re losing”

Kind of reminds me of something I deduced from life a long time ago. If I find myself being defensive, I may not be so sure of my position in the first place. I'm sort of talking myself into my position as well as trying to talk someone else into it...

Yep. If I have to try to convince you then I am also trying to convince myself...

Emailed Mr. Papp for a progress update a couple weeks ago and still waiting to hear back. Sent a follow up email request today...

Given 4xoverland.com.au was mentioned in the above email posted to public, and people asking about companies mentioned in this, I thought I should respond. I can only speak about any involvement from our side, to be fair, and cant comment on the other companies who are listed above.

Given there were confidentiality agreements in place, i A/ need to be careful, and B/ an surprised based on those agreements, between the companies, that we have been put into a broadcast about this without prior consent, though there isnt anything overly secretive about what is in that email so far.

I will start by saying that some initiatives take lots more time and money than can be anticipated, and many large projects cant get off the ground without some industry support, engineering, and involvement to see what can be possible. I was contacted to have a meeting, and discussions, to see what could be possible, and our knowledge on these vehicles and Toyotas in general. We offered assistance where required, design ideas, supplied some parts that were required for the testing process.

At that time, it appeared that things were progressing, and we decided we would offer some support, and be on the ground floor for the process, to see if a cool idea could be realized. Not quite inventing fire, or the electric light globe, but if possible, a cool Cruiser option, I am sure many would agree.

With the components envisioned to be included, if the testing gets approval, and vehicles can be supplied, they will be a very nice vehicle in the niche market for those who want them.

Not unlike an Icon 4X4 Fj series set up, FJ ute program with Aquala Industries body, etc for those who just want one.

If the technology passes, but it is to big a task for the company spending on it right now, I would imagine the process may be able to be picked up by a company who has importing and vehicle preparation down. I would see the 79 as a niche into the USA market as a good thing. These are purely my thoughts on such a project, based on experience in other areas, I might add. Sometimes the value is in the technology, for the embryonic people in the process, rather than the actual 'go and supply to market" .

We are currently at a point of waiting for proof of concept, [testing pass] and purchase orders on the parts required for who ever and when ever this may become a reality.

We wish everyone involved the best of luck, and hope 79s in the USA become a success, and small businesses with big ideas continue to work toward inventing and supplying things that make peoples hobbies better.

Who ever they are, and where ever they are.

Just saw this shared to a Land Cruiser facebook page I'm on:

" This specific vehicle was used for baseline EPA testing and has seen little road use. It is being sold as it is being replaced with 2019 model for additional testing. Our testing exemption for this unit expires July 2019. THIS UNIT IS FOR EXPORT ONLY!!!! What you do with it after export is up to you. Will be placed on auction if not sold on this venue (which I do not expect it to) $60,000 USD DELIVERED"

I've tried contacting John Papp twice now and haven't heard back about where they are with the project. Will be interesting to see if in fact a 2019 makes its way across the ocean. On a positive note, they finally got the wheels mounted.

The ad states for export only.
