So these are about $90,000AUD which makes it about $66,000USD. Add $5000 for S&H and this needs to go for $71,000USD for the guy to break even. And I've assumed that he didn't pay any big bucks to get it registered.

Considering he claims to have bought three of them, he may have gotten a discount of some kind. He refuses to answer an question on the bottom of the ad when someone asked where they came from but the fact it is LHD could narrow down the possibilities of origin.

Considering the white color it could be a UN version:

Once a title is issued I think the registration hurdle is mostly past you.

You can insure anything for a price.

Whether or not an insurer will assume liability for your 79 hurting or killing someone on a public road because the 79's crumple zones are not up to US spec is a whole other story.
when you go to insure any vehicle that has a non-US vin #, The insurance company does not ask you if it's 25 years old or not or if it has EPA and DOT documents. You just tell them that the vehicle has a foreign VIN or state assigned, and give them the year make and model and tell them to do a manager override, works every time. If you add a vehicle to your insurance policy, it's insured. 18 yr olds are insuring RHD Nissan skyline's that are 1000 hp at the wheels, I'm pretty sure that 79 won't be a problem to get coverage for.

I've been talking to him and he keeps claiming he will email the vin, photos of the federal certification stickers and the NHTSA conformance letter. He claims it's a factory built truck, no body swap or other chassis changes. The pictures are stock photography for the General market HZJ79. An HZJ79 is a lot cheaper than a VDJ79 from Australia. If the guy has figured it out legally, good on him, and I will buy one of his trucks to drive. But I find it quite dubious so far.

When Steve says it is dubious the matter has been settled.

Steve, I'm about an hour and a half away and there are other club members closer so if things magically get in order and you need someone to check it out we could probably make that happen.

That said, I'd happily bet the 86 or so cents of change in my pocket that that doesn't happen!

Could someone be using the new Federal laws related to low volume vehicles that were recently passed? I know the vintage recreation folks are really excited about this new law. If this truck could get labeled as "low production" "reproduction" vintage LC pickup then it might slip past a regulator's desk. It still has to meet emissions standards but gets a pass on safety regs. Most companies are using the new GM certified engines but maybe some countries meet us guides.

Too bad closer members don't have some time to validate this person's claims. The vehicle is at $60k. Would hate to see someone get screwed, but maybe they will be just fine, I guess we will find out in 5 days?

Anyone will 60K+ of cash is not stupid and will have done some homework.

My guess it the seller will end the auction prior and the transaction if there is one will take place out of ebay.

EDIT SCAM Alert reply from seller - Your name and email address. Or don't. Bidding has gone well beyond my expectations, and I have 7 offers for more outside of eBay. Completely up to you.

But what is the endgame? Nobody is going to pay that kind of money without even seeing the truck AND the title. Ebay protections highly favor the buyer.

I still have no idea how you would get one through customs without a lot of paperwork.

i'm fairly close, and have half a mind to go look at it, just to see it.

I've heard about people that work with and for NGO's who will order equipment, often vehicles from overseas to the US in order to "equip" the vehicle for its final destination of use which if often Africa. These are able to pass thru customs without much scrutiny because of the NGO paperwork that got it into the country. So say you get it IN the states hard is it really to then title it?

From my understanding, the majority of the issues getting it off the dock is in the paperwork, being an NGO makes avoiding that pretty easy.

Without being documented through customs and having paperwork to show such, it's going to be pretty hard to get any state to give you a title. The only other route really is to bring in the vehicle in pieces with separate bills of sale from separate sellers put it back together and get a self built title from your state with a state assigned VIN number. Last time I checked that process cost a lot more money than it was worth, but it was legal. Without talking to the seller all we can ever do is speculate. I totally hope it's legit, I don't want to wait 15 more years to get my dream truck here.
