Well that was a solid pain in the ass. That cork gasket was just as hard. Pro tip, use a wire wheel on a drill to remove the gasket.

I ended up needing to pull the new water pump the mechanic put on. I ordered an Asin WP to replace. Everything I had that mechanic do, I just replaced… F my wallet.

I was only planning on swapping the radiator…. Hahaha

I’m pretty happy with my results though.

When you get this new Aisin WP pull off the back plate and reseal the area between that plate and the WP body. If you install the pump and it leaks and you have to pull it to seal this area you will be hating life. WP on a 3FE is one of of the worst jobs.

Sweet. Thank you for the tip. So when I pull that backing plate off, just run a Bead of water pump rtv? I’ve never remove the back plate before, I’ll check it out when it comes out.

I beg to differ on worst job. So far it’s been this Pushrod gasket. Water pump is easy to get to when you already have the entire front of the motor area taken off to get to a single gasket 🤣

Once you pull it off you'll see what to do.

Just waiting on parts to arrive…. My NACE 2 really coming though with the SP-3,2,1 surface prep for the W.

You already know what color it’s going to be..

Hey brother!! Way to do solid work. Right on!!

Orange is faster than black.

It's why Toyota installed orange dots on intakes
The infamous “orange dot” mod!

Nice, I had to tap after the 3rd page though.

I’m actually starting to sell “Chevy Orange” dots in my Etsy store. You won’t not not be loving your new not.

Should the rocker arms have any free play? I can’t upload a video, but 9 out 12 have movement. A few of them seem excessive.

Just looked it up in my manual. It’s not normal. But I’m going to roll with it. No way I’m pulling the head/gasket to measure tolerance..

If you're just talking about the valve adjustment, it's super easy to do with a 12mm, a flathead, and a set of feeler gages. Lots of info on this. if you're talking about play on the rocker arms along any axis other than the valve train shaft, no that's not good. But in neither case would you have to pull the head to measure or repair anything. From where you're at in that picture you're 4 bolts and 5 minutes away from having the entire valve train and push rods out.

Thank you man. I am definitely out of my comfort zone, knowledge base at this point. I ordered a set of metric feelers that should be here today.
Maybe I was reading the wrong page but my Chiltons repair manual, Or I was tired, or not understanding what I was reading. Possibly a combination of all three.

I agree, valve lash adjustment is simple. Just follow the steps in the Toyota manual.

1st time may be daunting, but once you're done, you'll wonder what you were worried about

Hey man, I’m thinking I’ll thin layer water pump RTV on both sides of that paper gasket. Is that the standard OP?

Yes, do that. Don't know about SOP but after I had a new Aisin WP leak straight from the box I've been resealing the things.

Authentic paper FSMs are out there.
