Thanks I very much appreciate the help from everyone. Ultimately, I'm driving this beast back to Norfolk,Va and that is where all my concern lies . Most cruisers around here don't have a tremendous amount of rust but I want to be safe driving back and keep it in good operational condition. The drive from Chatham, Ma back home will be hellacious, but my fiancée insisted it would be a great journey lol

Be happy she is aboard with the cruiser. Bring earplugs for both of you on the long ride make it an epic road trip and take in the sights along the way and give yourself enough time to enjoy the slow lane and back roads which is where the 40 really shines

x2 on this...I've made multiple cross country roadtrips and my biggest regret in regards to them is not taking enough time to stop and enjoy the scenery and the trip itslef.

If you have any issues on your way back home, I'm in northern Va and could help out if needed. PM me and I'll send you my number. Which way are you planning to go home?

Thanks a ton everyone for your assistance. It is really nice to know that cruiser owners are looking out for one another. I should be making the trek when she gets back from deployment at the end of this month. Just got a good tool bag and completed my metric wrench set.

Hey all, just reporting that I'm currently in progress with the relocation of the cruiser... I seem to have oil leaking from the front locking hubs and spraying onto the wheels radially. Dunno what that's about.

the axle wants a rebuild - the inner seal is leaking

Is it diff oil or grease that's leaking? If you have a snap ring pliers and some tools, I suggest you pull a hub and inspect the inner axle. If you're leaking diff oil, then your knuckles will be liquified soup and you'll have a bigger issue including the possibility of draining your front diff out while driving.

Stop at pic 3 in this post, and see what the situation is:

If it's just grease that is slinging out the hubs, then it's not as much of an issue and you can use some FIPG to seal the hub mating surface temporarily until you can address it when you get home.

Well, I believe it is just grease. I wiped it off completely and drove on the highway for a solid 400 miles and only a little leaked out. At very low speeds I hear a squeak that gets louder and softer as I go, but that could be a bearing needing to be greased.

At the end of the day, the cruiser is in the driveway at home and far from its last home in Cape Cod.

Gotta thank the fiancée, as she made the journey bearable and was a trooper the whole way and enjoyed it, even through the heavy rain driving on 95 through NYC...had to apologize for the hole in her door :-/

She sounds like a keeper.

I don't think I would take a 40 on 95 especially in nyc...lol...especially one still sporting a stock motor!

You are definitely crazy enough to own a 40 :beer:

Thanks...yea it was probably a bad idea but we are back now...I have a few things I want to fix but I ultimately want to make sure the motor is still in good shape. What are some checks besides an oil change and inspecting visually, that will tell me if there is anything going on under the bonnet so to speak.

I have also been wondering...I want to take the top off for the summer, but where the rest ambulance doors are screwed to the tub, its very rusty... it won't support a CCOT or other tailgate I don't think. What are your thoughts? Thanks again all on helping me start the journey.

is it stupid rusty where the tailgate would bolt? or is the whole corner rusted out? if so, you'll want even that cheesy tailgate in place to help keep the body in place.

So the first four are where the doors attach. They appear to be very rusted or bondo-ed. And the last two are the rear differential and the transfer case...does this look abnormal?

I think I'm going to have trouble sleeping tonight with those images in my head.

This rig is the perfect candidate for an Aqualu tub. You will LOVE the results. How does the frame look?

yes, just don't run a tailgate :hillbilly:
