Nah, as long as you use high temp. I run the same stuff in my lexus. better to just not tell anyone... huge debate from a bunch of people that haven't tested. Just like flat towing an 80 :). Go with it.

My 1980 owner manual say ::Moly grease .
I used other grease too, at the moment I have moly grease in my grease gun. Hope this helps a bit ;)
Cheers
Peter

Nice build thread.

What's your estimated completion date, and exact address where the truck will be located?

Sounds like a PM question.

aww come on the state isn't that big.... :grinpimp:

Not sure. But I would run the proper grease because you are running drive flanges and your birfs will be spinning all the time. I have to believe the Toyota engineers had a reason to run moly in there. Most auto CV shafts also are packed with moly.

Thanks for the insight guys; not sure at the moment what I am going to do, but I am not to keen on digging into the axles again......

I wouldn't worry about the grease unless you plan to put alot of miles on it...........alot. Sure moly is better suited but, I doubt you will have issuses.

After what has seemed like weeks of messing with the transmission, T-case, and PTO case we finally reunited it with the rest of the drivetrain last night.... new bearings, seals, nuts, bolts, etc.

New clutch and resurfaced fly wheel going in......

trans/ t-case ready to go in.....

Very Sexy

Not true, wob is just wanting to know when "his" truck will be finished :D

Looking good JP!!!

You may be onto something there. ;-)

Thanks for all the compliments guys!!!!

I think our project morale has been low the last few weeks as our progress seemed to slow down quite a bit, but getting the drivetrain back in really boosted our spirits. I can't wait for the weekend to get here so we can run brake lines, finish the suspension, paint bumpers, etc. and get this rolling chassis finished up. As I am dying to get into the body work.... as I and my father both enjoy that more than the dirty greasey jobs of rebuilding the drivetrain.

Hopefully I'll have some good progress pics for everyone joy after the weekend

Time to bump this thread back to the top.......... I've fallen down on my job of updating as we go:o

We've made good steady progress since the last update a couple of weekends ago. Lots of cleaning and painting of engine accessories and other drive train bits. We are getting really close to strating the body work hopefully we only have another week or two to go

The original hand primer fuel pump was long gone when we got her, but luckly through a fellow cruiserhead I was able to source one for our resto.

here she is all cleaned up and repainted..... looking good if I do say so myself :grinpimp:

had to clean out the bolt holes as they had been cross threaded at some point.

and finally the pump in her new home!

We had the gas tank pressure tested and steam cleaned at the local radiator shop and then I threw down a couple of coats of chassis black. Also cleaned up the retaining straps and gave them a new coat of paint.

went the extra mile on the gas tank straps and cleaned and polished the original brass tabs that held the felt in place......

DSC_0504.webp

we were missing a few tabs so we sourced them from one of 1962 FJ40's and it looks like Toyota switched sources at some point between '62-'64

and the new clean and shiney tank ready to go back in for another 40 years of service

Gas tank going in and Steve is using his best "bear" hug method to hold it temporarily in place :hillbilly:

DSC_0520.webp

getting the tank lined up and in place without scratching all that fresh paint was trickier than one might imagine...

success!
