Eventhough: were you in downtown Clemson today, I though I saw an FJ with signs and graphics. Was that you?

Yup - that was me. My store is in Seneca, along with an office. I'm also on the Clemson campus a few days a week helping with research and some teaching.

Speaking of - I saw a ton of Hundies today in Clemson...

So compression TESTING continues. Yes that's what I was told. Apparently they didn't find any antifreeze leaks, and they did an over night test and are now doing a "cold" test. When I spoke with them I was super busy and had to get off the phone so I couldn't dig further into questions. Does this make sense to any of y'all!

Yep, let 'em do their thing, they are quite good they can even put ya a TRD supercharger on an 80, and rebuild the motor after it blows. They will get to the bottom of your problem.

Well I just got a call from RHT and am happy that they didn't find any leaks during all the compression testing.

So I'm goin to start with new plugs, wires, and cap and see where that leads me. I'm still a little lost because the symptoms of the HG being bad were there (white smoke, film in the Rad, shuttering at idle). Also getting them to look into why my oil pressure display works on and off.

Well the white smoke could be either condensation or a little oil burn off at start up, these motors are known for it. The rough idle could be plugs, a bad distributor or timing off, or some kind of vacuum leak. If you flushed the rad or drain 'n' filled it might be normal to have some funk in the system that caused a "film" to appear in the fluid. On the later model trucks I always heard that you should run the Toyota Red Rad fluid, but I don't think the green will harm anything, something about extra additives etc... Could just be Toyota kool aid, but that was what I had heard somewhere. Any ways keep us apprised to you situation and if you can't resolve it, sign up for a HAMOM (help a member of the month) who knows you might have a crew at your door ready to help troubleshoot and fix.

You mentioned a vacuum leak, do you by chance know if they sell a full vacuum hose kit. I know for sure some of them are looking rough. Or should I just go to the auto parts store and buy a bunch of different diameter hose and cut to size?

Cut to size from NAPA, you may want to press RHT a little harder to check for a bad HG. I spoke with another of our members who had one go bad on his, and he is pretty much a cruiser expert. They told him it wasn't bad, but when the removed the head they found it bad. It might be worth the trouble and expense for some peace of mind. The other things shouldn't make it run that bad. Usually vacuum leaks are associated with older cruisers no so much on the 80's.

What other thing can they do besides pressure testing? I failed to mentioned that the oil light on my dash also came on while this was happening. I checked the oil and it was low so I added a quart. Now the oil had been changed a week prior to this and I just figured the mechanic just put in 7 qt. I guess we will see what happens

Got a call from Brad today and he said the 80 is running and driving great. All it needed was plugs, wires, and a cap. He also figured out why my oil pressure gauge wasn't working. He ordered an oil pressure sending unit and told me he would have it buttoned up by Fri.

Anyone know the sizes of the vacuum hoses I might buy a roll from jeggs or summit racing

I want to say it is 7/32 but don't quote me. Take a sample in to NAPA or the like, and compare to what they have size wise... Glad to hear it was only a tuneup, do the PHH anyways, with the miles that thing has on it, it is a ticking time bomb...

Definitely doing the PHH and already have the two hoses at the fire wall ( blue silicone) ordered from a Guy hear and am looking at what it takes to do the rerouted green line hose for the other one. Hopefully ill be able to do that this weekend.

Hey Kevin if the previous owner mixed the green with the Toyota red It causes a mess . Bad juju.
Somehow they dont mix together and cause clumps and such . EXperts chime in!!!! Im sort of new as well. I recomend a full coolant flush change all the hoses and back to Toyota red. Just take all the hoses off and turn your engine into a sprinkler!!!lol ..There is a good step by step somewhere in the 80 series FAQ section on how to do it and change the PHH . I also recommend bypassing the rear heater while you are there. That bypass takes the heater hoses from like 10 seperate sections down to like 4 or something .
Good luck ...
Jeff

Yeah I have heard that mixing the red and green is bad, going with straight one or the other is not bad, both are ethylene glycol based, the red has some extra addatives that helps take care of the cooling system, but the red didn't start until 1995 from what I recall, so anything prior to 1995 would have had green fluid in it, as do all 3FE 80's, 62's, 60's and FJ40s, so as long as it isn't mixed it is fine.

Ok mines a 94 & its green so I should be ok right?
Also what's with people using distilled water to "flush" the system?

I just got the 2 small sections for the fire wall "FHH" in the mail. They have the compression fittings and look like a piece of cake to install.

As for the piece that goes down the back of the motor on the drivers side that's the notorious PHH right? I thought the bypass was 1 long curving hose from the top to the motor??? I keep reading about this and I guess I won't truly get it till I do it.

A LITTLE PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW!

Just got my 80 back from RHT and drove it to get some lunch at the old navy parking lot and it stalled out while parking. Going to eat and take it right back because this shuttering and stalling is why I dropped it off in the first place. Anyone have any ideas????? They replaced the plugs, wires and cap, and said it was fixed.

PHH is on the bottom way up under hooked into the block its only long enough for the clamps ...lol. Remove drivers side wheel peel back the well cover and look toward the back away from the oil filter.
The pipe runs from one of the hoses down the back of the valve cover and hooks in to the PHH it has two bolts hookin it in on the back...If you dont have ratcheting (????IIRC 8 mm ) box end wrenches go buy some . You flush with tap water ..then clean out the tap water with distilled. The head gaskets can be a weak point so be anal about the coolant system.
