I gotta quit looking at for sale ads.

I saw this '87 fj60 for sale here a few weeks back and immediately thought it was a really good looking 60. I miss my old red 60 "Patina Louise" that my buddy @Ocho77 bought from me a couple of years ago. I really wasn't in the market for another red truck, or any truck for that matter, but I read through the ad and was impressed with the extras that came with it. I really got hung up on the SOR rear sliding windows, but not for this truck, but for "Chunk", my other 60 that is taking me forever to get done.

After looking closer at the pictures I was amazed to see a rust free 60- not something I have ever had. Chunk was really close, and so was Louise, but this thing was rock solid and sporting original paint as well!

It was strange that the extra parts drew me in first but once I focused on how great a truck it seemed to be, it all made sense.

Phone call in and a deal was struck right away (If "I'll take it" counts as a deal :p )

@Ocho77 and I made a whirlwind trip to get it and made the round trip in 24 hours with gas stops and a quick snooze in the truck only because of the Covid 19 concerns.

I won't be able to work really fast on it due to two careers and wanting to get Chunk done, but I will steal some minutes here and there.

Here's the dirty beauty loaded up in Tennessee about to roll for home.

👍

I’m a sucker for the tan but I do like my root beer as well. Red is probably near the bottom of the list for me as a color choice. But if mine had been red I’d still have bought it 😉

Freeborn= just macho. Born free. Of rust. In this case!

put 40 steelies on it, clean it up and flip.

tehehehe.
I am going to make every effort to keep this one stock (ish). It is already desmogged and has a header on it - with a blown exhaust gasket. I have to pull the header to replace the gasket so if I keep it, I will ceramic coat it. Otherwise I am going to put the stocker back on, OR maybe 3fe manifolds. I have some on my parts 62 so that is a possibility. My 55 has them and I like the stock looking engine bay with the better flowing set up.
Otherwise it is getting chrome factory wheels and 31" tires. That will look weird compared to all my other trucks.

Also this one will be a model for another Bowfin Cruisers roof rack offering that will look nice on a more traditional stock truck. That's all I am saying for now.
Concept pictures soon.

Hay Pat, how about a small spot buff as a tease??

:)

Yum yum!!

I pretty much never put a tire on a Cruiser unless it is at least a 33" tire, until now. I am making myself keep this truck stock height so I bought some 31x10.5/15. BFG KO2 tires. That is still a larger size than stock but I think it is a nice size for a stock height truck.

It was nice to reap the benefit of the smaller tire - lower price!

I've rounded up some stock chrome plated steel wheels and should see the tires Tuesday and hopefully get them mounted up and ready to go on Red.
I have to polish up the wheels anyway so hopefully tomorrow that happens. Steel wool and CLR then polish compound. They aren't the best but should clean up pretty nice. I'll shoot some pics of those tomorrow.

I have a pretty rough looking set of factory chrome wheels but with CLR and fine steel wool, they are cleaning up pretty nice.

Topping them off with some carnuba wax to hopefully slow the corrosion down a bit
