You can get a Uhaul open trailer for around $20. If you rent it Saturday morning the return date is usually monday but you only get charged for 1 day.

Thanks for the idea Steven. Looks like a U-Haul trailer capable of hauling around a ton is $30 - even if it is for two days thats not bad. I just don't like U-Haul's "45 mph speed limit" for its trailers...

What is Uhaul's "45 mph speed limit" I haven't heard this one. I was planning to rent one from them this summer to trailer the 40 down to Corolla.

The sticker on the fenders claim 45 as the max speed so that they have a good fight in most insurance loss cases. I would trust a uhaul to tow a motor or furniture but would not put a FJ40 on one. Their car trailers are notoriously undermaintained and a FJ40 is pushing the weight limit. Search UHaul on here for some FJ55 pictures. I hear Penske vehicle trailers are a much better choice.

that 45mph speedlimit is a joke..... they only have it to cover their own a$$

towed the 40 home all the way from reno nevada behind the FJC at well over 45mph :D; with no problems

So its a lawyer issue. I will check out Penske and see what they have available. I know the Uhaul around the corner from me have some brand new car trailers that just came in a couple weeks ago. I was going to request one of those. I should really just bite the bullet and go buy one. Hmmm do I want the trailer of the MAF rear bumper.

Yup - its a legal thing. I moved cross country twice driving the largest Penske truck available while towing a Wrangler. The truck did fine and I can't remember how many U-hauls I saw broken down along the way. From the research I did if you are renting a truck for a long move (anything outside of 'in town') Penske will be more expensive but more reliable. DONT go to the Penske dealer in Greenville on N Pleasantburg across from Home Depot - I wouldn't step back into that store if my life depended on it - two years later and I'm still pissed.

I towed my 55 from here to Cartersville behind the FJC. SCARY. Granted I was probably a bit over the weight limit of the trailer and the truck, but what is life without adventure!

I wouldn't rent another Uhaul to save my life. It was a true POS.

Don't get me started on U-Haul, they have made my life miserable on more than one ocassion. I will go out of my way to avoid them. Long story short, they can't work their computers, reservation line does not match inventory at store, equipment is not properly maintained, took over 1 hour to get a trailer that was "reserved", ratings for vehicles are off (if you can't tow a miata with a full-size V8 Chevy there's something wrong), customer service doesn't care to help you, I drove past 3 U-haul centers to wait a 1/2 hour to drop the trailer off after fighting with customer service about location,   etc.

:rant off: Blood pressure needs to drop now...

man I feel lucky........ haven't had any probs with roughly the 5 times I have used them

plus when ever I am going to to the 40 I tell them I am going to be towing a "miata" instead of a landcruiser :D

Sorry Man, didn't intend to Hijack this one. Can someone get this guy a trailer?

I'm joking. :grinpimp: No worries here. My neighbor has one I might be able to borrow but it doesn't have brakes and I'm not sure the load limit. I might just rent one from uHaul and see how it goes.

I could go on and on about Penske, good company, HORRIBLE local office...and I mean HORRIBLE...to the point I should have called the police (literally) and pressed charges... I guess those who were with me that day know what happens when someone raises their hand towards the :princess:.

I've never rented from uHaul but have read plenty of stories. I've even seen the threads about a couple Pigs that were lost due to towing with uHaul trailers. I tried to rent one to haul my Piggie back from MI but the Piggie was over the weight limit and I didn't want to push my luck - I already was enough in that adventure!

ETA: if anyone obeyed the uHaul 45 mph speed limit than no one would rent from them. Its kind of like saying "go clean Marshall's garage and don't find Jimmy Hoffa."

Well Steve just remember that you are towing a ton....so don't over due your tow vehicle....if you have to stick to 55 stick to it....mostly people loose there vehicles cause they were going too fast. And check out the tow rig before you pick it up....you can always turn it down....so give yourself some options.....I towed my 40 back on a uhaul with a ford 250 from upstate alabama thru hotlanta and had no worries....so just take your time and you'll be ok.

You also towed about a thousand pounds of crap on my trailer:flipoff2:

Tow vehicle will be the FJC - it is my only option for a two vehicle. Trailer will probably be my neighbor's trailer. I'll don't drive with a heavy foot but will take it even slower if need be.

hehe you should have seen how bowed out you axle was under that load...... the tires were leaning in at about a 10* angle :grinpimp:

You will be good with the FJC. A trailer and that motor doesnt weigh enough to make the FJC struggle.
