Look what I got today! :D

Hopefully I'l get them fitted in the next few weeks. So I'll try and post up some pictures of the install then.

OK! So as of this morning, my Bolt-in King Shock kit has been ordered. I went with Sonny from downsouth motorsports for the simple fact that he is the most competitive with pricing. There is a 2 week build time on the shocks and then they will be on thier way!

Seeing as I'll be waiting now for them to arrive, and between now and then all I'll be doing is getting the UCA's fitted, I thought I'd take the time and run through the rest of the mods I have planned for the next few months. Sort of a "Watch this space" if you will. Starting from the next planned mod, to the last on the list.

1: The Extreme Duty Valve body upgrade from Rodney at Wholesale Automatics, here in Australia. Any of you who own the 5-speed A750 auto know that it is a very dulled down gearbox, that robs a lot of power through the drive train. Not to mention the constant down shift from 5th to 4th whilst cruising on the highway! :bang:

2: A cat-back exhaust system. I haven't decided on the brand yet, but Hurricane Exhaust, (here in Aus.) make what seems to be a half decent kit for a good price, so I'll probably go with that. I am not going the full kit yet as I am not sure what the future holds in the way of engine mods. And I don't want to fork out cash for extractors when I may not end up keeping them.

3: The Slee Rear Bar, Darren from Auscraft gets them into the Country for us. So I will be in touch with you Darren for another quote in the coming months. I did get a quote off you a fair while back, so considering that prices may have changed I will be in touch again to check, and ORDER!

They are the 3 main upgrades I will be doing, and I'll try my best to put a decent write up on each of these as they're done!

As far as I know shotts, it's just the TD's that had the failures. But the V8's could have the same problem I guess, if they hit the bumpstops hard enough, and enough times. I'm lead to believe that is what causes the problem.

I got bored this morning and decided to finally get my UHF CB radio fitted, seeing as I finally got an aerial. Sorry for the bad picture quality, phone photo..

Got around to pulling my winch back out this weekend, and re-orientating the free spool leaver. On this particular winch, a Warn 9.5 XP you can only move the gear train around two bolt holes at a time, if that makes sense. I don't have enough experience with winches to know if this applies to others as well, but I imagine they are fairly similar. All you do is undo all the hex head bolts, (4mm allen key) and slide the drive assembly off the drive shaft and move it around as far as you want, (going two bolt holes at a time) and slide it back onto the shaft.

I also got around to fitting my Upper Control Arms. This was virtually a one banana job. I just used a bench vice to press the bushes into the arms. I had to give the mounts on the chassis a bit of treatment to fit the new arms in becuase with the bushes fitted, they were just a little too close together.

Here are some photos for comparison

how are your extended bump stops/ Hockey pucks holding up.... I really need to get arround to sorting out a similar solution but just whated to know how they are looking a few weeks in?

Yeah I checked them out on the weekend while I was under there, and I don't think I'll get them to come off even if I try haha, They aren't going anywhere.

Seeing as how they've lasted, they are going to become more 'semi-permanent' rather than 'temporary' haha. Meaning they will go further down towards the bottom of the list of stuff to do.

If you unscrew the bump stop itself, you can fit up to a 10mm spacer under that bumpstop and screw it back in.

Or you can also do this, and use 90's model Hilux front bumpstops which screw in, and are about 10-12mm longer than the 100 units, which are also in the pic above.

And yes, the V8 ones crack too.

Its caused by hitting the bumpstop hard.

The arm missing the shock can also be related to the shock length. We use either 16mm or 30mm longer front shocks [and 760mm long rear] so the more droop, the closer the arm comes, and the more ride height to maintain the correct droop you can run.

That's interesting about the hilux bumpstops fitting, I did think about putting a spacer above the existing stops, but I didn't think that 10mm would be enough on it's own to stop the wheels hitting on up travel. It might be though, as I didn't measure anything.

The Kings I've ordered are longer than the current shocks, I'll measure how much more droop I get after fitting them.

Darren do you find the need to use limiting straps anywhere to limit droop with the longer shocks?

The bushes do a pretty good job of limiting droop with 760mm long rears, If I were to fit a limiting strap, I would fit it to the centre of the diff for when jumping it, rather than restrict it on the outsides, when it articulates at slower speeds.

You will find the bump stops will unscrew with a big set of multi grips, and 10mm 1/3 out on the a arm is a 30mm bump spacer x the extra distance out to the wheel.

Darren,
i'd be interested in your opinion about the hydraulic bumpstops i saw on 4WD TV tonight...well yesterday now, and if they could be used for IFS 100 series.

How do they work for us ? (normal 4wd 100 series/Lexii) Not something we need to look at?

It's probably something i won't be interested in, but for the ih8mud people, and lcool.org people given there is a crossover with members in some respect.
cheers
peter

ps LJ_24... email me peter.moore350@gmail.com i noticed you tried to msg me....hopefully i'll have a gold ih8mud star soon, but being out of work for a while...priorities change. I am working now which is good!

That's a good point, I didn't think of it like that. In which case the 20mm pucks that I made are limiting its up travel.

I was referring to the front suspension when I asked about limiting straps. Having the longer shocks up front, would the UCA's pull up down travel before touching the shock?
