Refresh my memory on how in depth it is to get to the harmonic balancer.

Perhaps somewhere in FAQ we can add this part number for future TB jobs. @2001LC did you ever run across changing these out?
Remove the front skid plate, from underneath 22mm socket on breaker bar layed on the frame and bump the motor over with the key to break the bolt loose. Pry back and forth to wiggle the balancer off, clean, place new balancer on, hand tighten, tighten with wrench till motor turns. I used a pulley holder but it kept breaking loose before I got to 300 ftlbs. I put a right angle Impact driver that goes up to 250 ftlbs on it to tighten it then had a neighbor squeeze the belt around the pulley while I hit the Breaker Bar with a dead Blow Hammer a few times. Replace serpentine belt before skid plate (it's easier that way).

FSM says the torque should be 181 ft.lbs! How lucky you didn't break the bolt in the crankshaft

Oof! Good job I couldn’t get it all the way. Not sure where I got 300. I am sure with the right angle drill attachment, it is not close.
I feel sorry for the next person to take it it off (that’s me in a couple weeks). Good thing I didn’t strip the crank threads out.

I have replaced one. It's slot for the keep key was damaged. So much so that it could rotate LH & RH a few degrees.

LX & LX470 have thousands of part numbers and many change over time. I find the best source is either look up myself with VIN# or call Dealership parts.

My wife’s LC is in the shop with an unknown electrical issue causing the AC not to work so we took the LX470 on the 1300+ mile vacation trip to Florida. She performed great and never skipped a beat.
While in FL, I did lose the 7 year old battery. I had Walmart deliver it and used the tools in the Lexus tool bag to change it.

The day after we got back, my wife started the car up and it was squealing like a fan belt.
Quick diagnostics, all pulleys turning freely, she ran off to the store and back and said it got worse. I popped the hood to find the belt shredding. I replaced with an old hood belt and it instantly shredded it, then I saw why…

The crank pulley / balancer was not aligned. The pulley had walked off the damper rubber.

It also ate into the lower timing cover.

Parts are ordered.

AC worked fine on the FL trip but is now starting to blink occasionally. Great…

Two cars down right now. Wife is driving the the trusty ole 4Runner and I am daily’ing the 57 until parts come in.

Replaced the Harmonic Balancer / Damper / Crank Pulley yesterday and put the old timing cover back on. New timing cover will be here early next week and I did not want to wait. Everything runs great again.

How many miles do you have on it? I'm looking to start tracking an age + miles correlation to damper failures.

I have 407,xxx miles on it and just got back from a 1300 mile round trip.

Thank you! I have 330,000 on mine. My TB belt will be due around 370,000. I will change it then.

When it rains it pours…

Family in the truck last night headed to gymnastics, check engine comes on, I hear a weird sound in the driveline, roll the window down, sounds bad, give it some gas and it doesn’t accelerate while heading up the highest overpass in Houston.

Glide to the shoulder 3/4 of the way up the ramp and put it in park.

Put it in drive and sounds like a shaking coffee can full rocks… sigh.

Neighbors in the same gymnastics class were 2-3 min behind us and saw us and took my wife and the kids to gymnastics.

I stayed and waited an hour for AAA and a flat bed.

Way down. Don’t fall.

At least it was a pretty sunset, so that’s good.

Tranny dipstick was on the low side but not below the last mark.
Engine Code = P0715 - Input / Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction — I’ll say so. 😂

I move fast I guess. Checked eBay, Craigslist, OfferUp, car-part.com and FB Marketplace for part outs. Found a 152,000 mile 1998 LX part out on FB Marketplace. The truck was lightly wrecked in the front and had caught fire in the front. The yard had the tranny so I went and picked it up for $1k. I picked some other little things off of it.

Nothing worse than stranded with family in the car - glad you were safely rescued and on the way to fixing.

Original trans made it 400k+?

Yes it was a little stressful but luckily only for a few minutes. Yes it did make that long. Pretty impressive!

I may tear into it later to see what happened and if it is salvageable.

Dropped one kiddo off at a cousin’s house and the other two want to watch a movie so I decided to Jack the truck up and remove skid plates and make a plan. Then I just removed it.
Fluid looks good and clean. Very few and small metallic picked up by the bagged magnet dragged through the fluid.
IMG_8263.jpeg

It took 5 beers to get it out.
IMG_8265.jpeg

I put a Cat protector plate on about a month ago. I wonder if the trapped heat burned up the tranny?

Woke up this morning and got to work. I had help for 3 hours. My littlest (5 y.o.) helped wrap up broken wire looms and add back missing plastic loom. We learned how to use the breaker bar, 12V Ratchet, and 3 different jacks today.
Installing transaxle onto new tranny.
IMG_8267.jpeg

Operating the tranny jack. Those hooks came in very handy during the job.
IMG_8268.jpeg

Getting ready to go in. My boy did all the jack operation so I didn’t have to come out from underneath the truck at all until it was in.
IMG_8269.jpeg

Everything is in, just waiting for some Toyota WS ATF coming in Monday before starting it.
It was a little more complicated than the old GM products but pretty straightforward.

I also put in new rubber brake lines in the front.
I discovered a bad U-Joint in the rear drive shaft. Also, I have one leaking CV boot from the clamps on one side and a small tear on the other side spraying a little grease.

Good to have a helper for sure! He's a quick study, especially for only being 5!

Sorry, y’all! I’ve been slackin’. We started baseball practice for both teams and it took up a lot of free time.

That following Monday I received my Aisin WS tranny fluid and threw it in. It took 9-1/2 quarts!

IMG_8277.jpeg

Turned the truck on and cycled through the gears a couple times and felt it bite the first time!

Backed it out and cycled it a few times in the driveway and parked and checked for leaks… dry so far.

During lunch, I ran it up to the gas station for a fill up, came back, and found a leak on one tranny line. I also adjusted the shifter linkage as it felt sloppy. That tightened right up.
I re-seated the tranny line and went to pick the kids up and it performed great!
I took it to work the next day and it performed flawlessly. It is actually smoother than the old one which is odd because I thought he old tranny was smooth.

Not bad… broke on a Wednesday, got the tranny on Friday, put it in Sat morning, got fluid from Rockauto on Monday and drove it that day. 5 days down!

I shook the torque converter and it sounds like a box of rocks so I am guessing it was just the torque converter that gave out.

I did a final check for leaks today and it was dry so I put all the skids back on.

Ever since purchasing this LX470, the rear AC would sometimes work and flip to heat without warning or pattern. At the Yard I got the transmission at, I picked up the Rear AC Control panel from that one. I swapped them out and it works great now! The kids are relieved in this heat.

This weekend I started a long anticipated project… it worked for a few months after I got it but seized up one day.
…. The Sunroof….
It started great.
I stripped the head out of both tne handle screws on this handle… had to drill the hole and do the reverse screw easy out on both.
IMG_8453.jpeg

Then the one little screw that holds the overhead sliding roof switches stripped and had to do the same to that one. Sorry about the dark pic.
IMG_8482.jpeg

Eventually I got it all out. I did not take out the lower panels but did pop them loose.

IMG_8486.jpeg

There she is.

IMG_8483.jpeg

I found the source of my water leak. This kinked sunroof drain.

IMG_8488.jpeg

As I massaged it round again all this dirt fell out.
IMG_8489.jpeg

I put two zip ties around it to keep it in shape and put two pieces of foam on either side to keep it from crushing again

IMG_8491.jpeg

This little clip was a pain in my butt but eventually got the sliding roof assembly down.
IMG_8493.jpeg

I set up a table in the house to work on it.
