Also got this to replace the one that a PO removed sometime before I bought it.

Their were sun faded marks on the original console that match the mounting bracket perfectly.
I’m guessing it was originally dealer installed as the hard top has the dealer installed CB antenna mount and antenna still on it.

It’s odd that the original owner of my 40 got the AC, powersteering, top of the line CB and stripe graphics but not the optional defrost horns. It appears that many early ‘79 models, i.e. Jan and Feb as well as mid and late year 40’s got that option.

Maybe it was dealer installed by drilling the dash. Not sure. Anybody know?

First off Happy Easter!
So like most Cruiserheads who can’t go a day without thinking about or tinkering with a Landcruiser, I searched about the grounded out Idle Control Solenoid that a PO had done.
I stumbled on a post in this thread regarding the out idle solenoid and emission controler.
What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week?
It led me to findng 8 bad solders in my Emission Control circuit board. The one with the yellow and red circles was the worse of the bunch.
Thanks @78fj40mg

I ended up cleaning the rusty bracket with distilled white vinegar, cleaned the plastic cover and of course cleaned the circuit board before resoldering the bad ones.

So I’m still trying to get this 2F to idle without choke. So I searched the definitive desmog guide thread
The Definitive 79-80 Desmog Guide
and came across a picture of a ‘79 -‘80 carb (2nd pic)

Check out the differences between my 2/79 carb linkage (1st pic) and the 2nd pic in the circled areas. Wondering if this is my culprit?

*Update - my linkage was installed wrong by a PO or previous mechanic, maybe when rebuilding the carb.

Ok. So emissions control computer is reinstalled with the resoldered joints.

I checked the ICS and I hear it click when 12v and ground are applied to the two wire terminals. However, when the ICS is connected to the green connector with the Ignition on, it is constantly getting 14volts at idle or open throttle. It is idling very high approx. 2000RPMs after a 10 minute warm up with the choke knob pushed all of the way in (flush with dash). As soon as I unplug the ICS green connector at the carb the idle goes down to aprox. 700RPMs but only when warm. After a cold start, unplugging the ICS results in fuel starvation.

*Update - As a result of the broken solders on the Emission Control circuit board, the ICS wasn't getting 12v or ground. As a result, a PO must have set the carb idle screw too high. So with the circuit board now fixed the idle was adjusted down and it idles smoothly.

So I reattached the linkage as depicted in the SOR carb ID guide.
Unfortunately, no change to the high idle issue. Vacuum switch test showed it was OK. Will check VSVs tomorrow the start fiddling with the idle set screws.

Got a few things done today.
- Replaced the throttle linkage boot. The old one was trashed.
- Replaced the missing choke opener linkage clip. Lost a clip in the abyss of 2F land in the process.
- Installed a CityRacer intake hose (still looking for the intake horn. Anyone. Anyone. Bueller.)
- Transfer case shifter knob replaced with an original one that has the shift plate
- Received a refurbished cat heat shield in the mail too.

Nice rig!!! Mama Mia lots of spaghetti under the hood compared to my 69. Glad you are going stock with your FJ and you have an excellent candidate for that (nice running start)!! Martin

After several headache inducing hours looking at the vacuum schematics and reading the emissions manual. It’s starting to become clearer why all the spaghetti is there.

I went through the same hassle when I bought mine. I can’t remember any of it now and also can’t bring myself to open the manual. ;)

I probably will forget it all too at some point. Just as I did with most of my 80 series knowledge
