I have everything except the brackets for my MT upgrade, your writeup is definitely going to help. Nicely done Romer

Running a smaller pulley sounds like a good idea...how difficult was it to remove the original Pump pulley?

The remanufactured pump comes without a pulley

Is the top of the frame where the bracket bolts flat?

I'm hoping to do this at the same time as a 2" body lift, and it looks like some 2x2" box tubing might space it upwards nicely.

I have about a 1" body lift on my 40, I used a peice of plate steel as a spacer between the steering box and the bracket to get everything aligned, worked well.

Nice writeup, great pics! I've always been very intimidated with anything having to do with steering/suspension, but this mod is relatively easy, even for me... and yes, can't believe I waited as long as I did.

for a 3b?

Great post, I'm just getting parts together to do my BJ 42. Your pics really are gonna help! Just a few questions if I may. my pump will have to go on the passenger side, below the alternator, does anyone know how I can extend the high pressure line over there?? I need a pulley to fit in front of the single crank pulley on my 3b, would a pulley from an f engine be compatible? Also , for anyone else considering this mod for a 3b, there is a good picture of a bracket in the 2000 Sept toyota trails page 27. If anyone knows of a drawing or a source for that bracket, please let me know..Thanks again!

nice

wide belt pulley, what dia?

NOT 3/8 coarse, they would be metric (note 8.8) doh thought it was the longer motor mount bolts.

Nice job Ken and great pics. Bill Dorry
FYI, The bolt for the pump would be standard not metric and 8.8 is the grade of a metric bolt not the size.

The Pump came with one bolt that I didn't use but fit in the hole (GM Mount??) So I tok it to the Hardware store and I was pretty sure it was 3/8 coarse, could have b wrong, but I am positive they were standard size and not metric.

Thanks Bill. If you look in the photos, there was one hole I just couldn't drill and gave up after 6 drill bits broke (all new). The other holes were fairly easy (Scratching my head).

P/s

I think I would take the bracket off and try do drill the hole that is missing. You might have a piece of the first drill bit stuck in the hole and that is why you cant drill it out. You might need to drill from the other side. If you drill with a small bit first it will make it easy to drill with the big one. Bill

Thanks Bill,
I did try small bits and from the other side. The 3 I have are synched down to 90lbs and I think that should take whatever load it may see.

I have been driving around having too much fun to tear it down again.

I have a 48.5 belt on it is just a smidge to big and squels a bit. I need to get a 47 inch belt. No hurry since it just squels and I have it adjusted all the way out.

Nice. I agree, it should go into the permanent tech column.

I spent a few days looking for the right V Belt. I finally found one that fit just right.

If you are using the pulley system that was there to power the Air Pump and Using Bill Dorry's brackets, the best Fit is a 47-1/8" belt from NAPA, Part 7465.

Awesome thread Romer. Dont think Ive ever seen a more simple step by step write up for a 40's PS. Definitly needs to be in the Tech Links.

What was the total cost of all the neccessary parts?

Nice job Sir, i have to say i love mine, but i lost one of my nipples where can i find them?

ummmm. You do realize you left yourself wide open. Since this is tech, I will let it go.

You can get them from CDAN, Toyota or JT outfitters or even try a Junk yard.

I am assume you mean the nipple that screws into the Mini-truck PS Gear Box.

You are looking for a 79-85 PS Gear Box nipple for a 4runner or min-truck.

What was the total cost of all the neccessary parts?

Costs Including Shpping Below

Saginaw Pump $52
Minitruck Gear Box $135 (Came with Highpressure line and return nipple)
Brackets (B Dorry ) $197
Pully and bushing $54
Belt $12
Power Steering Pump Cap $6
Return Line hose $8
Fluid $5 (Bought extra)

$469 total - vs $999 for JT Outfitters kit

You can save money by pulling the Saginaw Pump from a Junk Yard. I bought a remaf. You can also go to a pull yourself Junk Yard and find a mini-truck gear box, hose etc for less than $50. The junk yard I went to specializes in Toyotas (Yota Yard) pulls the parts and has them sitting in their warehouse.
