I can't thank you enough for such a detailed response as well as the resources shared.I have a Rochester 2 bbl that came on my 72 when I got it in 82. I had to fix the accelerator pump leather gasket back in like 2000, that bonded to the wall with like a clump of glue. Other than that I have never had to do anything to it, other than some carb spray every few years. I bought a heated ultra sonic cleaner and a gallon of carb juice to really clean it out after all this time.
The float controls the needle valve which shuts off fuel flow when it seats. The needle valve can be easily damaged due to modern fuel or impact damage, poor mechanics. The seat could be damage or there is crap in the way. Too much fuel pressure will push fuel past a good valve. Clean and inspect the parts. There are vids for carb work from a guy here - I don't recall his name right now.
