hello there, im kinda new at this to bear with me.
i am purchasing my first 78' fj40 and need to replace steering box and pump... any recomendations? thanks kevin.

You probably need to start a new thread for this subject. That way you will get more "exposure" to people who might be able to help you on the board. If you only post in this thread, only people who were already subscribed to this thread will see it.

Hope this helps...

The curiousity has been killing me......... Did anyone watch his FJ go on ebay? If so you got to tell me how much?? SAD regardless but understandable

Thanks

It never sold. Still siting in my garage. I had someone from ebay offer 22K, but he sounded like a douche so I wouldn't sell it to him.

long time comin

Birthday Post:

I think I needed these past two years to get over the stress that the LC caused towards the end of the build. The tuning issue etc. the bad engine... I just burned out on the whole thing and needed to walk away. Tried to sell but with the market the way it is, and the cruiser still not set up for sea level....

I had a realization the other day that there's no point in letting her sit around in the garage all spring- time to get underneath, clean off the dust and seasonally retire the daily.

Any of you guys live out in Los Angeles/Santa Monica area? Pics soon to come (think within the next few months).

Hope everyone is well!

Best,

Eli

Great to hear you still have the LC! I wondered if you ever sold it. Seems like every time I sell something like that I end up regretting it, so I'm glad you could wait a while and make a decision without being under pressure.

Good luck on the finishing touches! Keep posting pictures, we all learn something new from every thread that's posted.

I think about you and your cruiser from time to time... hope all is well and get that back on the road... I am glad you are still around and glad you have not sold it...

Coming back to Cruise Moab this year Eli?

:D

Hey great to see you still have the cruiser. I had thought about selling mine at one point, It seems like I never have time to work on it. I am in IRAQ and can't wait to come home and drive it. R&R leave in April..Best of luck getting it workng right, look forward to seeing some more pics. I love all the build up threads. You put too much work into her to get rid of her. Good luck!

Hey Eli,

I wondered a few times if you sold your rig. You sure had lots of problems with the build. But don't feel bad, you're not alone.
best of luck

oh yeah, im in SoCal too

hey guys-

allright, changes are in progress this week!

tearing out the TBI setup and going back to a carb setup. looking forward to the : simplicity / not having diesel black smoke come out of the tail pipe / engine actually runs / more than 10 mpg !

resealing diff's and tranny as they have been slowly dripping away this past year.

ditching the way-too-noisy muffler for something a bit more mild mannered.

i'm thinking after all of this time away I owe you guys a back to the forum and back to the 40 video update rather than photos.... stay tuned.

cheers

I agree. Pics or video are absolutely required.

pulled the tbi off today- changed out the fuel pump, put in an inline fuel pressure regulator, and threw on the carb.

I know, its not a qjet- but the way things are looking right now it is going to be doing alot more driving on the pavement than on the trails so fuel economy and drivability are the most important. Ill be putting a piece of fuel line inbetween the bowls so that off camber situations won't be much of a problem (so I've read)...

tuned it up. power timed it to 12deg. no pinging and tons of power. its like a whole new engine I never knew existed

for those of you who followed this build - you know how exciting it is for me to finally have her all dialed in! Can't wait to get rid of the daily and drive full time.

a few crappy pics for now and video once I've had some time to iron out the remaining trim details next week sometime.

thanks hugh. its good to be back!

while I have the time (aka sitting with nothing to do at work) I thought I would think outloud a bit and have you guys weigh in your opinions on my future to do/wishlist...

top priority: The springs I have on now (never bothered to replace since I didnt know how bad they were before the build...I think they are rancho :whoops:) are very very stiff. nearly get air when on the freeway and go over a bump- so you can imagine what speedbumps and dips are like around town.

Since its going to be the daily what kind of springs have you guys had luck with? I don't think I have the time or money to go SOA, but open to suggestions.

May change the seats to something a bit more road-trip worthy like heated volvo seats...or something...but thats pretty low on the priority list.

I need to quiet down the inside- maybe some dyna-mat (or knock off alternative to save $$$) under the floorkit?

Cruise control mod of some sort...still researching options.

Steering linkage is tight. Gearbox is not. Even post refurb kit. High priority fix.

Front window glass needs to be replaced (where should I source this sort of thing?)

Rear bench seats.

Going to do something custom between the seats for storage/media player.

Clean up the engine bay

Headliner/LC Emblems/Door Panels

I think I'm going to take a trip to Mark's offroad down in Burbank and try to source as much of this stuff as I can from him- figure it will be a much easier *thinking one trip solution* and less expensive than hunting things down one by one.

Thoughts....?

Bored at work too

Just skimmed through the whole thread...holy s*** dude you put yourself through a lot. It's always so interesting to see how people make decisions on what "needs" to be done with these things. Nothing at all to do with your rig because it's super cool but just a general observation of the overall process, myself and so many others: getting caught up in making them perfect is a black hole of disappointment. I found that out the hard way. We can rationalize spending as much as a brand new rig for something that was never designed to (and never will) ride like a modern 4x4. To be taken with a grain of salt - Here are some suggestions for your list:

lift and suspension - before dips and bumps - slow down and let the gold diggers count your spokes.... OR speed up and catch a little air:p ...it's a 40 and it won't ride like cadillac no matter what.

Seats - you have nice seats

Dynamat - ??? Dude it's a 40 - get a bikini top - take the hard top and doors off so the traffic noise drowns out the engine noise and the sounds of those big ass tires. Heavy metal will do the trick as well.

Cruise Control - Nah

Gearbox - fix - especially if it's unsafe

Center Console - Those are cool to have - good ones are pricey but they are cool to have. They have them already made for stereos with locks to fit 40s.

Glass - as in windshield? Take it so an auto glass shop they'll get you hooked up.

Clean the engine bay - nah - it's just gonna get dirty

Rear bench seats - Unless your always hauling an extra person around it's just another thing in the way.

None of my business, and I'm all for people going nuts on these things, but dude you have the dream rig right now. You've done so much already. Drive the s*** out of it and enjoy.
