SNIP....

What do you guys think?

Wow. First time in this thread. Boy did I miss a lot! Fantastic thread! I commend you for your hard work.

What do I think? Sell it. Yep, I said sell it.

Pay off your debt (if you have any). Get yourself a $2k DD. Focus on study and school. Start a new cruiser fund. It can be as simple as a jar that you chuck your change in. Fill the jar and stick the money in a mutual fund. Leave it alone. Repeat.

Take one picture of you and the cruiser. Find a nice quite and scenic spot and set the camera on auto and click a picture. Spend some time reflecting how far you have come and how you have grown. Have the picture put into a frame. Destroy all others. Get rid of all the stuff asscociated with the cruiser... all of it. Then sell the cruiser.

Focus. Focus on school. Knock it out. Apply your passion and drive.

Focus next on what you want to do in life.

Once you are debt free, happy and secure with your life, have served others, then and only then... buy a cruiser as your reward. Maybe 2 cruisers? His and hers?

Wow trekker, thanks for the advice. First time someone has told me to sell it (other than my mom). I think it is in the best interest of my future to do what you are saying. Now I need to figure out what to do price wise and such, and weather or not to sell it asap or drive it for a bit and then sell it. IONO. :bang:

:steer: it and enjoy it, at least for a little while Eli...and also to prove that it is ready for sale.

As for price? Throw it up on ebay with the reserve set at what you honestly feel it is worth or you need to get out of it $$ wise for it to truly help. See what happens and where you end up. You may find out that what you can get out of it $$ wise will not "set you free" so to speak :frown:

It would be great to see it go to a fellow MUD'r but the reality is you're likely to get more $$ on ebay and that seems to be the greatest impetus to selling. Are you in a hurry to decide? If not, take your time and keep it advertised for when the "right" buyer shows up.

Otherwise keep it and if you do end up moving to Europe, feel free to drop it buy and I'll store :steer: it for you free of charge :D

Eli,

I have to agree with trekler's advice....it's right on. Your cruiser is very nice, but there are intangible things that are much more important in life than having a cruiser.

Enjoy your college experience and forget about a cruiser for a few years. The less you have to worry about in college the better. Focus on your education and get involved in school.

Live your college years to the fullest, experiment and and enjoy it as much as you can. However, always remember that college is a privilege and focus your priority on academics’.

Chalk up your cruiser experience to a major accomplishment in your life. It took a lot accomplish your goal on completing your cruiser project. Now you just have to direct that same focus on completing school. Just by doing your project, you're much further than most at your age...you stuck to something and you finished.

I commend you!

Late,

UNO.

Is owning this cruiser interfering with your education?

Somehow I made it thru undergrad and grad school while owning and driving a cruiser. I had no idea it was such a handicap... :flipoff2:

Seriously though, it's a piece of gas-guzzling art. Do you need it? No. Do you want it? Maybe. Are you emotionally attached? Sounds like no. Is gas 3.15 a gallon? Yes. Is gas going to get any cheaper? No. Is there a ridiculous (good) market for a truck like yours right now? Yes. Will the market be as good in 3 years? ???? Did you build it to make a buck or because you're into cruisers? ???? Sell it, bro!

ok so I guess its time. You guys are right. I had a guy interested @32k, but I told him it wouldnt pass smog and so I think that was the end of that.

What should I post it up on mud for.

So that I dont have a bunch of potential buyers looking at my thread and lowballing me could you guys PM me with what you think I should list it for? Then Im going to delete this post. Or what would the best way be to go about figuring out a good price. Other than "its worth whatever someone will pay you for it"

In truth - that is where I was with air cooled VWs years ago. Sold everything, gave away all my manuals, everything went. I have a few pics in a scrap book but I have one picture of my two best projects and a friends in a small frame in my bar. I had a real passion for those as a youngster but realized it would be best to move on. The only two things I still have are an SST for the transmission and a brake adjusting tool. It was wise to escape it and it allowed me to move on, finish my education, get married and make some real leaps and bounds socially and professionally. Now that I am where I want to be I can enjoy my Cruisers with little concern over balancing it with success, family or education (just easier now).

There is something to be said for the feeling of freedom you will have if you get rid of it all.

For what it is worth, I have had many, many cars and trucks in my life. They come, they go. Don't ever make a decision on your future and your success that is impaired by a vehicle. They are just metal and you can always get another one. Always. Make a bunch of money and go out and buy something else or another 40. They are great rides, but not that rare. Concentrate on your future. If you put as much work in your future education and job as you did on this 40 you will be very successful in life. Good luck.

Holy s***, honesty if i could get that much i would sell mine in a heart beat.

I haven't posted in a while but I have been keeping up with you and your problems. That cruiser has def taught you a lot about problem solving, which is what life is really all about. It has paid for itself a thousand times over I bet. Im not a great scholar but Thoreau's great work "walden" has a few lines I think I understood. He talks about the farmer and about truely being a free man but then he talks about the house (in your cast the fj40). The question you have to balance is, do you own the house, or does it own you? If it is keeping you in one place, or limiting the good things you can get out of life then it might own you. Sell it if it does my man. It has taught you patience, hard work, and how to really solve problems. Sounds to me like you need a different challenge. When you make your $$$ buy another one and have some kid restore it for you.
For what it's worth,
Paul

well that is one sweet rig. Personally I would have a very hard time selling my rig and it doesn't even come close to looking as good as your does. Granted my old man and I tore it down and put it back together so there is that sentimental value added in. I graduated from college about one year ago and to tell you the truth I'm still in debt and will be for a long time. $30k in school loans last a long time when you have other things such as house payments, and countless other bills to pay. If your rig is reliable keep it drive it enjoy it after all you did the work why shouldn't you. Go to school, learn lots get a good job. In all reality you'll have the rest of your life to bust your ass for the man to pay off your debt. A quick sale now isn't a cure all for money issues. Stop spending money on it and drive it. Enjoy it while you can and if you jump the pond sell or store it. Good luck with whatever you decide, but imagine how many chicks will dig that thing at college. :grinpimp:

Ok guys, Its official, my dearest cruiser is up on ebay. I didnt have the heart to mention it at first because I feel in a way that I have let some of you and myself down by selling it, but it is what it is.

As for the rig, I feel that its essentially good to go once it is moved and tuned for the new owners elevation.

Someday I will have the time to build another one and hold onto it for good. I havent been on mud for a while because school/starting my professional life, has taken over lately, but I will be lurking around and following all of the other awesome buildups going on.

Thanks for following my thread guys. Its been alot of fun.
