rollercoaster
More like slow motion train wreck? šŸ¤” ha - actually this process/Cruiser has taught me a lot about life. And how many people can say "I'm on my second engine rebuild and I've owned it 20 months!!" Thems are braggin' rights there!!

Engine stab may be delayed a day or so.

On deck - heater box and more lines - because it is nasty inside the pipes and the test pipe went well - Won't be a perfect refresh - thinking of AC down the line... maybe... the goal is move the ball down the field for a first down - else my OCD would just buy new everything I can, then refresh what I can't.

Some before pictures this am.

What a day - several posts to make - will do what I can then need to get back to the last long pipe clean or the smaller two get the foam on.

Basically today was speedy heater/water line refresh - the screws that hold the plastic top to the metal bottom were rusted - I called for for parts - all will be a week or more - I have til Sunday when I go back to KC to do some more work on it before the engine - Looks like engine starts 6 pm Tuesday and ready to stab and start Wednesday - good, Heading up to MN on Friday.

Anyway - decided to use Rust Converter that Nolan mentioned on his Patina thread - it turns the rust black - so double play in my book.

Took rest apart - kind of a general mess - flushed out the heater core - I feel like an automotive cardiologist - I think Yellr got a double bypass with cleaning the pipes and heater core.

I didn't get a before paint picture. The plastic top is more of a grey - The roll bars and seat backs are a grey to - I think in 79 they started using it vs black.

Tons of scratches etc and fading. Darn I really though I got a photo before the first coat. Away - grabbed this - close enough for a rush job - consistency is credibility as I like to say.

Used 320 sand paper, prepsol then got 2 coats on - will do two more light coats tomorrow. Did a really good job.

Then on to the metal parts - started doing the rust converter - it wasn't really that bad. Then I got to wondering and used the die grinder to get some of the bigger patches - so I started to grind it to bare metal.

Ended up metal etch primer tonight before it got dark and will start in on it crack of dawn. I put tape over the factor 13 stamp to leave that.

Made a second run to Lincoln - Fresh out of the oven!

When I pulled the water line there are metal bands - I decided to throw them in and see if they would be done quickly in both colors. I had to agree that the other stuff was less of a priority and could wait until after Labor Day.

I did the hood support and got that back a week ago or whatever it was - and when I took it to KC to install, the pin holding it to the hood like like crap so yanked that and asked it to be a priority. Not in the close up are two grills (are in first pict) - one for Yellr and the other will ultimately be wall art when the bib get coated. I got an OEM badge for my grill. Love the rear water heater.

That is it for now - back to work.

I lied - no pictures. So as stated before, second engine rebuild. Want to know what I did? I bought a 1984 2f recently pulled out of a 60 series that is a good rebuild candidate. Did I just jinx myself making it known? probably.

It was a good price even if only a core - the last experience - I will not suggest you build the older 2f block unless you are going with the pricer pistons - just so hard to find. Can get the flat pistons in the new 2f. The engine really will be something if someone needs on in the future.

Oh - yeah - I bough some parts in MN a couple weeks ago. Will post picts too. Some of the stuff I will never use and will trade etc as people need.

One last thing today.... Someone posted on the "What have you done" thread they got a winch cable disconnect from @Fourrunner - I never knew he sold those, so I ponied up.

I need to get those listed. Got some recent pics just haven't had a moment to get that done.

Some prep work etc before I head to KC again tomorrow (Tuesday) for a couple of days- this time for completing the engine and hopefully installing it and maybe starting it Wednesday.

I made a quick run very early yesterday before the heat kicked in - clean and POR15 the frame around the engine - Also PORed the bell housing. (I did the gear box stand and shock tower on the driver side in the spring when I sent my steering box to @65swb45 to go over as the car was darting all over when I was working on breaking in the first engine -

Cleaned the firewall too. Got that big spot on the firewall removed (lower right in the blue circle) ... I wasn't wearing gloves and I am pretty sure I got ride of my finger/hand prints too.

I'm going to head down a bit early before our 6 pm start and see if I can get some more cleaning done - . - Will be moved to an AC'ed garage.

Heater box after 24 hr refresh - I'm missing a part - I didn't lose it; never had it and explains why I didn't think it was working right - It hold the shaft for the bottom flap in place. The to-do list keeps getting longer not shorter.

Got the shift plate back on the pocket door - I know rivets - this is the bandaid. Didn't repaint the Pocket handle, yet the powder coating on that, the meter plate, and ashtray frame turned out really nice.

maybe one more picture update before the night ends.

Not letting perfection getting in the way of progress.

Last little bit,

Finished cleaning the other heater pipes and installed new insulation - Also cleaned the rear heater motor/fan -

Took a break from all this Saturday afternoon. A small local winery needed help with picking and crushing grapes - was new to me and fun to meet new people. What got me was the free beer and pizza. I'm a sucker for that combo. Throw in some Keno - oh boy!

Some pictures from yesterday- did more cleaning around the transmission—

Picture of the old piston and various stages of construction- the rings took a while to get right … the bottom ring took patience.

Took a lot of pictures to record ā€œdid we make sure the markers lined up… etc)

Will be a long day today. After coffee, need to inventory some parts I brought down. I’m hoping I didn’t forget a couple gaskets back in NE. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

Some more -

Me being inexperienced- didn’t realize what a gap and pain the oil pan is to get on.

With Jerry approval, we called it about 1:45 am.

(Oops Edit - I got few bolt kits from Overland Metric - will edit again to add tag to him)

Going through most of this as a group, it seems!
Thanks and much appreciated!

I’ve had a lot of windshield time the last two weeks with this and I was thinking about your thread and the bolts/door hinge and contrasting with my ā€œflabdominalsā€ exposed…

I will spew my philosophy here vs taint your threadšŸ˜Ž. Anyway, come to realize you sometimes make the wrong choices to get to the right place.

I say that as I realize this time around, I now have the opportunity to do things I should have done differently and Yellr will be (actually is) better than if sh$T didn’t go sideways and worked the first rodeo.

Too early for beers? It is hot out already.

It is funny the life lessons these old Land Cruiser have in them to teach.
