Filled the 3B with oil last night to leak test the pan. I have two small pin holes. One is coming from a previous weld repair. I’ll be welding them up after making sure it starts and run’s fine. I got my pallet ready on the back of the Mule to plop it on so I can put the flywheel and starter back on. Hopefully tomorrow.
Question for the gallery. Will I get fuel to the injector without turning over the engine? I was bleeding the pump earlier and couldn’t get any fuel out of the injector lines. I did get fuel out of the bleed screw on the IP.
Also is my make shift shutdown handle (vise grip) oriented in the correct off position?
One more small step today. Managed to get the engine off the stand and onto a pallet on back of Mule. I reinstalled the plate that holds starter and flywheel. Now for test starting I either need to pull the 12v starter off the B or borrow a second battery from one of the other trucks and use the 24v starter I have laying in the garage.
Today I managed to turn the engine over but the battery I was using went dead. I only got as far as disconnecting the injector lines to clean out some of the funky fuel while turning it over. I’ll start the process again tomorrow once my battery charges back up and hopefully get it to fire.
I put in a few hours of work this morning to prep the engine removal. Everything is unhooked and motor mounts and trans unbolted. I may yank it out this weekend if I feel up for it. I have no shade so mornings only before it gets hot.
Weather was overcast this morning so decided to yank it out. The motor mounts were toast. Clutch looked good but I think I will order a new one anyway.
I pulled the head from the knocking B engine. Experts would need to comment if what I found in cylinder 1 would be the cause of the knock or if I need to keep digging.
Looks to me the pre cup broke and dropped fragments down.
Hopefully this weekend will be 3B swap time. I got the clutch in from @cruiseroutfit, motor mount bushings in from Australia, flywheel resurfaced, and everything worth taking from the B is stolen. The injectors were rebuilt last year so they were the main thing swapped over along with glow plugs and accessories. I still want need to install a new rear main seal but Saturday morning will be the best time. Late afternoons are like sitting on the surface of the sun around here. No cover in my work area next to garage. May need to borrow a pop up tent from work.
I managed to get the 3B in today. Next will be getting everything hooked up and ready to start. Then I think I will drop the trans to clean up the gunk on it and install a new trans mount. I had to get a bit creative by myself pushing with a 2x4 and lowering at the same time.
I found out the B and 3B bellhousings are different. Only difference is how the starter mounts. I could drill out the threaded hole and use a bolt but I don’t want to do that. The trans mount needs to be changed so I figure I would just drop the trans and clean up under the tub. Might even swap in the 40 series split case that came with the 3B also.
