What would make the A440F overheat? Trans has fresh clean Amsoil Dex-III, there is no slipping, trans does shift smooth, everything seems good. But the trans doesn't like to go 65-75mph for a good distance on the interstate. Soemtimes about 50-60 miles the AT Temp light will come on and you could fry an egg on the tranny case. If you let it idle the light goes off in a few minutes.

Truck has 33x10.5 tires and didn't have a Tranny cooler installed like most I've seen. I do have a factory cooler which I'm going to install, but does this really make that much of a difference?

What else should I look into as to why it doesn't like higher speeds for distance?

If you have the trans cooler, I'd start with that.

Installed the factory ATF cooler in the factory location! All new hoses and fittings. Hoping this will solve the trucks hatred for the freeway. Planning on taking it down to Chenoa, IL in the coming weeks. Will post up how it behaves.

Looks great!

Pretty cheap on ebay, good quality too. I am also going to drop in a reman Alt next weekend just to be safe. Is it possible to rebuild the original with high quality parts?

Anyone have a good link for the Alternator swap for the 3F-E?

I have read a few posts of folks doing alternator rebuilds on original alts. Seems to be the way to go.

Truck looks great!

I just did an alternator recently. It seems like if you have an 80 amp, it cannot be rebuilt (easily), but if you have a 90 amp it can be rebuilt. Seems like the difference in the two visually, is the fan. If the fan is outside the alternator case, it is 80 amp. If it is inside the case it is a 90 amp.

This is my 80 amp....

Not a lot of good options for 80amp rebuild. They are considered disposable by many. I had shops quoting me $180-200 to rebuild it. Mine went out earlier this year and I started looking around for replacements and it got expensive and confusing if you wanted to swap to a 90amp (new bracket, pulley, etc), so I searched around and found a used 80amp for $35 at a junkyard that came off of a rig with 129K on the odometer. Pulled it and took it to Autozone and had them test it. Worked fine, cleaned it up, installed it and its been doing great ever since. My windows work better, lights are brighter, etc.

Hey TheLoyale,

I would say the he fan that blows onto the intake is worth having as is keeps it from vapor locking for summer hot weather. Here is southern California my fan starts to runs just about every time I stop. Same time, my truck starts every time even in the boiling heat. You may find that you can get away with it, but if it starts acting up, it could be the culprit.

Also, it seems you have sorted your issue with the Coolant Temp Sensor... as I was about to ask if you had looked at your air inlet pipe, look for cracks in the creases, as these seem to crack underneath and let air in un-metered past the mass air flow sensor causing it to run rough.

Rig is looking tough and super clean!!!

Can anybody tell me if the Cooling fan which blows air onto the Intake is worth having? I removed it during the Desmog and haven't put it back on yet, I wanted to get an opinion of if its actually beneficial to have during the summer months or not.

Yeah mines got the 80amp alt. O'reilly stocks a reman 80amp alt for $125, I will swap that in and keep the original as a spare. The only other thing I want to change on the truck would be the start, this one is very hidden as is the timing window...

Mean Green sounds like the way to go! For others who may buy one from a regular parts house, the one from O'reilly's didn't have the right connector plug. Has one else had this issue?

I bought a "Highest Quality" reman from a local parts house. It died 20 miles later.
Went to the dealer and got a Toyota reman (new parts are not available) and no more issues.

I take back my previous post. The one from O'reillys does work, looks like mine had some type of adapter from where the main harness is to the Alternator. I removed that and it clipped right in. Doh!

Also got the tires rebalanced since my sticky weights came off. Time to see if the shimmy goes away!

Couple months ago we took the 80 on a wheeling trip and did pretty good without lockers, went up north with my buddy and his '93 unlocked 80. Was a really good time, and nothing broke on my truck! I did bounce off a small tree (No bigger than maybe 3" round) which mashed my front bumper, but I'm gonna swap out this piece of tin for a real bumper (ARB or Slee) sometime.

I also some how managed to back into a 52' Semi Trailer which totaled my rear gates, they still open and work alright, but its ugly. Wiper motor probably won't work, the sheet metal is crushed in there pretty good. I can see the outline of the wiper motor. So I now need to get new upper and lower gates

Also, who has the little brackets that bolt the factory brushguard to the chassis?
